Talking BuckMasters BADF Life Hunts - building a trailer for those in a wheelchair

I am not a hunter so I'm not on any hunting forums but I know some folks on Yotatech hunt so I thought I'd post up here. Should be a cool project.

Way more information than I can tell you so here is a link to BADF Life Hunts
http://www.buckmasters.com/resources...ife-hunts.aspx

The Director David Sullivan is a local neighbor of mine and he asked me to help him build and design a trailer to transport a hunter in an electric wheelchair to a shooting house/blind etc to hunt. Trailer is pulled by a Polaris or 4wheeler.

We have an ATVWagon 1600 Utility trailer to use as our base platform.
www.ATVWagon.com

Widening the axles, building a new subframe, making a new bed with tailgate, toolboxes for storage over the tires instead of fenders, and adding a roll cage. Lots of other goodies as we think of them.

This is the non profit side of the organization and the budget is what gets donated. WabFab is donating all the labor, equipment, tools and space necessary to complete the project. I have coordinated with local businesses and friends to donate the materials and steel. The trailer in and of itself is covered.

I will add names of the businesses that donate here as things are solidified.

I am coming to my off-road friends for the bling and the little extras that will make this project rock, so if you have ideas please share.

Some of my thoughts are lighting, dual batteries, tool boxes, winch and accessories, grab handles for the roll cage and anything else you creative folks might suggest.

I will post up pics of the build as we get started.

Can't wait to see it. Sounds like it will be pretty cool, and for a good cause too.

Good work Wabfab. This sounds like a really cool project.
Don't forget rifle racks or bow racks. A small cooler and of course drink holders.
Maybe a CB unit on the trailer for emergencies. First aide kit. Small wench for stringin up an animal. Heated seat? Again really cool project.

Local businesses have stepped up and covered all the materials.
Cain Steel and Ryerson - steel material
Hank's Auto Glass - plexiglass
Truck Supply - toolboxes for the sides

I should have all my materials this week and begin construction this weekend.

Went to the local Buckmasters Banquet to raise money for the BADF Hunts as a guest of David Sullivan. We had a great time. Weasel found something he wanted.

Cleaning up the frame rails after cutting them for widening. Going to lengthen the wheelbase maybe 7.75" and widen it 10" total.

Not reusing this bed.

Everything off and put the tires back on (yeah I know they are mismatched via the tread pattern) to measure width.

Drilled a hole in the axle tube to see if it was hollow. No metal rod for an axle shaft but the rubber strips run all the way through. Weird. Splitting the axle and lengthening it. The heat from welding will secure the rubber inside so I don't think it would pull out.

Not reusing any of this but keeping it.

Blue tape is maximum width of 58"

Thought I'd use these tires and rims

New frame relative to the old frame.

Going to talk with a friend of mine Tom and some other disabled hunters to get their input this week.

Frame tacked up

These axles are broken!

Nah really cut in half to wider them 10"

Didn't cut the inner rubber tubing, it was already split in the middle where we cut the axle tubes - metal donated by Cain Steel

Frame all tacked up and axles fitted. Everything is 10" wider now and the base sits at 32" wide to accomodate the wheelchair.

Thanks to Truck Supply for donating (2) 60" toolboxes to act as fenders and storage on the sides of the trailer

Cleaning up some welds so things will fit back together flush

Frame all welded up

Sketch for the exo cage - dubbed it the "Sparky car"
