bamachem 3rd Gen Bumper w/ Tire Carrier Build-up Thread
#62
THANKS. Departure angle is much improved over the stock bumper w/ receiver hitch. Now that I finished the hard side, I'll build the other to match.
I have about 20 hours in it at this point and should have another 5 or so in the bumper and then another 10 in the carrier. It's not quick, but it's also being cut from stock in my garage and isn't copied from anything, so everything has to come from my head and my drawings and it just takes time.
It sticks out about 1/2 to 3/4" more at the rear and then tapers to just wider than the flares at the wheel well. it's not as wide as it looks, but the width was definitely driven by the carrier.
I'm planning on just turning the exhaust down somewhere between the bumper and the frame rail, and fab up a protection plate for it, but I don't think I want it out the side at this point.
Somebody asked me about the tag bracket via email...
it's a new OEM frame for a 1990/1991 4runner w/ exterior tire carrier...
i got it from Phil at http://www.toyotapartsales.com

Looks great Andy...especially for your first go at building a bumper. In the end, I will be curious to see if you have the same vibration problem I am having with mine.

Thanks Lance.
I'm hoping that I'll be able to lick the vibration issues.
I got to work on it some this afternoon. I got the Driver side cut to match the passenger side (measured about 8 times before I cut anything - ) and then I got that side's wing cut and bent and welded. I made a jig from the Passenger side so that the angles would match perfectly - and they do. I got some other minor stuff done like some reinforcement plating on the back side behind the spindle and finished up some welding. I was in the process of getting the brackets finished when my drill died. I'll finish the holes for the mounting brackets tomorrow and then get the rest of the brackets finished and then get the DS wing on and finished out. That should take the rest of my free time before Thanksgiving. I'll get to work on the carrier after a few days away from working on it.

Looking great........What kind of lock are you using? Any pictures of it? Mine just keeps popping out when I hit a big bump. I need to change it and I was thinking about the style of the Kaymar type. Let me know when you get a chance.

going w/ a #2 McMaster Carr Pull-Down Latch w/ Safety Catch - catalog page 2396 at http://www.mcmaster.com. I'm getting item number 51335A68 in stainless steel and 2000# of holding power.

I ordered the McMaster Carr Latch on Monday morning. UPS dropped it off yesterday at about 5:30pm. Can't beat that!
I got the DS wing on last night and closed off the main rail on that side. Today, I'm going to finish that side off, make some wing supports, clean it up and hit it w/ rattle can and call it done until i can find the time to make the spare carrier.
Pics to come later....

Is the vibration you are talking about from the tire carrier???
I am really impressed with your work. It will look very clean and professional when done. That much I can already tell from pics.
Now I have to get myself to Tellico in May--how cute twins. I swear I take a double take now when I see your writeup pics---wait is that my truck???

Have you designed the plates yet to absorb the flex from the bumper and keep it from impacting the tail gate and body? I would definately be interested in seeing pictures of that. I think that is (or will be) one of the most unique and inovative features about this bumper.

I used AutoCAD LT2005.
I haven't built them yet. I'm going to get the wings finished off w/ the plates next to the tires and some internal support to the frame brackets. After that, I'll add the internal contact/impact plates w/ framing and then add the tire carrier.

Are you going to re-route the exhaust?? It would look so go and be one less thing to destroy on the trail
