I just gots the 25' recovery strap and an aftermarket Hidden Hitch rear hitch with a locking pin. Oh, and a folding shovel.

I'm still factory with the tow hook up front. Looking at different options for that one though...

factory tow hook in front, two rears mounted to the frame, 30' and 25' tow straps, hi lift, and really long chain to use with hi-lift (straps stretch, and that doesnt get you too far with a jack)

i think thats it for recovery equipment.

o, one more thing, a 10' strap used as a tree saver.

i plan on doing the same thing though!!! im putting in a co2 system just for tires within the next week, i plan on using 20 oz co2 cylinders from paintball guns, only reason im using those is i have about 4 of them, and a fillstation that i can fill them with!! eventually ill have onboard air for running air tools...not now though!

As you can see, some folks don't fool around when it comes to recovery and survival; even a chainsaw on the list (what's up with that mytyota?). Out of all the lists posted, I've seen far to few 1st aid kits (& knowledge of how to use them) and no fire extinguishers.
One trick I've learned is to pick up some tire scraps from the side of the highway. If you're really stuck, build a small fire and throw on a couple of tire chunks. The thick black smoke will bring in
everyone for miles around.
For more tips, See how the US Army does it. (Chapter 22)

in the northwest

here in the northwest we have these funny round things called trees. And every once in awhile they do fall across the trails we run. And as far as a fire extinguisher i've always had one in my rig
and the wifes a nurse.

This question has strayed far from a recovery kit so I'll tell you what I bring on the trail...

Tools - complete tool kit with all standard tools and specific tools such as spindle nut sockets, snap ring pliers. and lots of spare nuts, bolts, electric connectors, etc.

Military style shovel, axe, jumper cables, ALL spare fluids including water, brake fluid, PS fluid, gear oil and motor oil. Chain saw with oil, gas and sharpening tools. I always have first aid kits and a fire extinguisher on board.

Recovery strap, Warn winch kit, hi-lift jack.

I keep these in the truck at all times.

I used to carry spare axles and birfields, but after changing to the longfields, I don't carry these on regular trips.

OK, the ultimate package for a long trip, would include all of the above, plus - my trailer full of stuff. This has a complete front end housing, the trailer axle is a complete replacement rear end (except it's 4.10 gearing with no lockers), short and long front axles with stock birfields. I don't carry a spare tire on regular trips but on a longer trip I would carry a full size spare.

Food and water are required, toilet paper, latex gloves, welding gloves and mask, welding rods are also in my offroad kit. Hip waders, sun screen, water purification and related surivial stuff, (bee sting kits, solar blankets' etc.) also included.

I try to keep this stuff all in a single place so that I can just load everything and go. I now have an off-road only set of tools for my truck that don't get mixed up with my shop tools. This way I can keep a complete set onboard whether I'm just running around town or off road somewhere.,,

Here's an old post with some good info also.

I have listed in there what I carry.
I did not mention my Warn recovery kit in the thread though, but it's always in the rig with a tree strap, chain, and other stuff for the winch.

Just wanted on this thread so when I go to buy stuff, I'll know what to get.

Chris

P.S. Does anyone know where I can get shackle hanger brackets that either bolt to the frame or bumper, or can be welded? I also just found Stainless steel shackles, which I thought would be good, but only if I could find stainless steel shackle hangers. No rust!

Good info guys.
question: will it be ok to leave a abc fire extinguisher in your truck or in a box on the roof? The heat buildup is what I'm worried about- do you wrap it up or?
Also, any problems with using the 12v outlet hooked up to a converter to run my compressor? I have a pretty good air compressor that could fill tires and run an air tool I think-

A seperate off road kit is a great idea too. I think I'll build one up.

Where is a good place in the Los Angeles area to buy off-road stuff?? Thanks guys

Fire extinguisher - don't worry about the heat. If it's got a low tolerance, the label will say so. I've parked my truck in the desert for several hot days and not had any problem.
How many amps does your compressor pull? I assume it's powered by 120v and I'm betting it draws at least 10 amps. That's 100 amps to a 12v system and will require running your stock alternator at higher rpm's while it's in use. You'll still be drawing power from the battery, so your run time will be limited to what the battery can handle. You'll need to figure in some recharge time for the battery.
