Hi All, just a quick inquiry. I have an 87 Skamper 13 ft pop-up camper that I picked up last summer. It is definately used, but in great condition (garage stored since new). I am toying with the idea of taking it to West Virginia this weekend camping. My family has land that is pretty far off the beaten path. By no means are we talking extreme off roading. My 4Runner has never been stuck and rarely drags on the ground. You do drive through a creek and some decent sized ruts, but other than that it is mostly uneven dirt. My question is whether or not anyone has experience with a "stock" pop up camper off road? I have seen these "off road" campers they sell, but you can't pick one of those up for 300 bucks. My concern is in regard to the lift system. There are 4 1" steel tubes that travel from the center of the camper to the corners where the roof lifts. I am afraid that if one of these tubes is damaged then the roof won't lift properly. My other concern (though minor) is mangling one of the leveling jacks mounted under the frame. These bottom mounted jacks only leave me about 7 inches of ground clearance tops in the front. I just wondered if anyone has encountered any horror stories by trying to take a "stock" pop up camper "off-road." Thanks!
