i'd stick to the toyota engines, proven to be much more reliable than the jeep ones, and i'm sure there are toyota engines which could crank just as well as that straight six, and last a lot longer, just my two cents from what i have read around here before...
plus, i think some people on here might be a little upset to see the two mated together

Look good? Never heard of a Jeep engine in a 40. Good luck finding adapters for that swap. SBC is a common swap.

not worried about adapters going to use the whole drive train minus the axles those motors run pretty well and are fuel injected my friend has a cherokee with the 4.0 with 4.5"lift 32s and stock gears and will smoke the tires down the road cant say that with my 3.slow in my 4runner which i thought about putting into the cruiser.

My jeep 4.0 in my cherokee had 191000 miles on it. Original engine and trans, didnt burn oil nor leak any. Only thing I ever did was oil changes, plugs, wires, 1 radiator and a water pump. Not to bad but my gas mileage was about 16 on the highway.

It's a bit late but here goes.
What are you smokin? I understand that saving money in the heat of the moment is important but when one exhibits mallis...well do I need to go on?
If you ever plan to sell the FJ40 and you install teh jeep engine, get ready to leave several thousand dollars on the table. No cruiser guy would by it with out an imediate plan to gut the engine compartment.
Jus my $.02 from apssionate vintage cruiser owner.
