front and rear lockers?

I have a 91 fj80. it has the push button diff lock. I know it does not have the front and rear diff locks. I do think it has posi though. How do I check? Do I loft the whole truck up put the tranny and transfer case in natural and spin the axle and see if both the tires turn the same direction? Was posian option for 1991?

I was also wondering if it was possible to swap a later front and rear diff lock into mine. I have the spot on the dash for the switch to go but what all is involved and what kind of parts do i need out of a downer fj80? Or would it just be cheaper and eaiser to put after market air lockers in? Thanks for any info.

P.S... I think it has posi because when the center diff lock is engaged the truck is super hard to turn and binds at a low turn rate and hops and clicks if i try to turn sharp at all.

Welcome to Yotatech!!

You might have better luck over at Ih8mud for ALL those questions you just threw up...

As, far as locker/posi checkin' might just try jackin up the one rear tire. If it spins freely, I'd think there's nothin in the diff...

The reason its hard to turn is because when you turn the center lock on it puts the car into 4wd. You most likely have open diffs

yea it seems from all the research that it does have open diffs but this thing is a psycho tank and i have been plowing over massive snow driffs and never just had 1 wheel on each axle spin. when its locked in all 4 get power reguardless. i wonder if the previous owner put auto lockers in? any way to tell?

Look at the diffs, if there is a motor with wires on the side then theres an elocker, if theres an air line going in then theres ARBs.

ARB's would be the best way to go regardless of the set up. spend the extra cash to get your 80 set up the way it deserves. and this isnt just me talking go look at my post and i got recommened for an ARB rear when i was thinking of doing an axle swap into a 14 bolt rear and d60 front with the rear locked up. 4x4fink just said that ARB's are deffinatly worth it. and when you get the compressor to run the air lockers then be smart and spend the extra $100 or so to get the air line hook up added for airing your tires up and down and whatever else you may need an air line for.

Funnest way to check is to just go get stuck and see if you get one wheel spin...

I've got open diffs too and all 4 wheels will sling mud and snow as long as I've got momentum, it's only when I'm just about to get stuck or am stuck that it turns into the good old one wheel spin.

you'd know you had auto lockers, especially on the street in awd.

aussies or detroits front and rear, arbs are definitely not worth it imho..... ive ran them and had many problems.... I know countless people who run selectables and have had problems with all of them. I also dislike elockers a lot.

Aussies you will be able to install yourself with simple hand tools.
