I believe it stays lit to tell you that it has been activated so that you don't unintentionally start the vehicle while in gear. It resets itself when the ignition is de-energized(key turned off).

Say you're on a steep incline and your engine is off. How would you get moving up the incline again? Without the switch, you would start rolling backwards as soon as you took your foot off the brake. The parking brake is not really going to cut it in that situation because it isn't strong enough. You are now rolling backwards and you must rev the engine and dump the clutch to get moving again, which will be hard on the driveline and may cause you to spin your tires. It's also much harder to control smoothly. Now if you have the switch, just put the truck in 1st gear, leave the parking brake off, and start the truck in gear and continue up the incline smoothly. All you will need to do is be ready to give it a little gas once it fires up because idle RPM's aren't going to give you enough power to keep going and it will stall.

You might want to practice this in a parking lot to get the hang of it before trying it when you really need it. It works best when the engine is warmed up and won't kick into high idle.
