For the tranny pan sealant, I use "The right Stuff" by Permatex. You can refill the tranny within about an hour after putting the pan back on.
Some sealant instructions suggest you wait 24 hours before refilling, so whatever sealant you decide to use, read its instructions. The last thing you want to have to do is drop your pan again to redo it.

Has the ATF filter ever been replaced? If you have a lot of miles on this truck you may want to go ahead and get a new filter or at least clean the old one. Also probably even more important the magnets in the pan get covered with sludge and need cleaning. Note the location of the magnets and replace them in the same places, or even better the FSM shows the proper magnet locations (I think they move around some over time).
For the gasket I've used that "Right stuff" and also the Toyota FIPG. Both worked fine, just completely clean the old FIPG off both surfaces and wipe good with rubbing alcohol or some non-residual solvent before applying the new stuff.

ok, on the sealant stuff. it has been raining like cats and dogs all day so im not gonna get to it today and theres no leak there. it was just a bit of residual left around the plug.
i was under the assumption there are wire mesh screens in there and not filters! i may be wrong or right! i might as well just pull it off to say i did it and i think it will be better off to just tap it off and not take the chance of a $2k tranny job! i have 120K

I was looking at the inside of my old oil pan today and there isn't much material inside to drill out and re-tap. It has maybe a 1/16" of metal at the most around the plug threads. I think I'd get a helicoil unless you can find another plug just a tiny bit bigger.

Oh I forgot I have pics of the inside of a 2001 5VZFE auto tranny pan, it looks to have a bit more room for tapping than the oil pan I was looking at today. This tranny had 27,000 miles on it when the pan came off for a valve body modification. You can see the magnets are starting to get stuff sticking to them. At over 100,000 miles they will be coated with a thick layer of metal paste.

AWEOME PIC!
im assuming the plug is in the top left corner of the pic...? looks like it has some play to tap. is it cheaper to just retap? i am going to have to get a slightly larger bolt right? or is the helicoil the better route for me? in the pics online of the helicol, it looks just like a spring! i have no clue about the taps and such other than make sure its straight and turn a bit, back off...turn a bit more...back off and again and again!

helicoil kits can be pretty expensive, like around $20-$35 each. Sounds like you got the basics down, just add some oil to your tap. The helicoil kit will come with the correct size tap.

i just called around and no one knows what the correct size will be. the bolt for the plug is a 14mm, i am assuming if i just do a tap, the auto shop on the base will let you use tools for free, i will have to get a 15mm bolt? unless i do the helicoil kit.
i think i will try to just tap it to a larger bolt.

did you look on www.rockauto.com and see how much a new pan from them is? I've bought replacment parts from them and they have good prices.

Yeah a new pan would be sweet if you have the bucks. You could take the bolt to a good hardware store (Ace) and match it up to a nut to find the thread size.
Remember if you drill and tap you don't have to stay with metric.
