Here's a question; other than for looks, why tint?

True they block sun but then they make night driving harder. What else?

UV protections for starters. Haven't you seen these cars with their back dash, and the backs of the back seat all discolored and faded. It's from the UV. So protect your interior. If you block out the sun like that your car will be cooler inside if it sits out side also. I've also found out that people are alot less willing to get into an altercation with you, because they can't see what they're getting into. I can't think of much more than that. I never have an issue with driving at night. Well the only issue I have is backing out of area's with no lighting. I just roll my window down though.

Why Tint???
I answering this question let me qualify by saying that I am a staunch supporter of tinting. I live in a state where the limit is 35% NET, use my car for my business, and have tried all angles to get support for tinting beyond the 35% limit

1) Definitely, for most of us looks heads the list

2) Heat reduction within the passenger cabin resulting in creature comfort

3) Preservation and longevity of interior upholstery components degraded by UV rays and high heat

4) Reduction in glare resulting in better visibility during daylight

5) Reduction in glare caused by bright lights at night

6) Privacy

7) Less risk of Melanoma caused by UV rays … although today’s OE auto glass is reputed to have UV protection

8) Added support and protection to glass to prevent bodily harm from shattering glass

9) A diagnosed medical condition of Glaucoma

Well, these are the reasons I can think of. I would love to tint my front windshield if it was legal and I am very comfortable, day or night, with about a 28% tint all around if that were legal.

I can absolutely appreciate the point of view that law enforcement has about approaching a vehicle at a traffic stop that has blacked out windows and not knowing what is lurking on the other side of the window. That would scare the crap out of me. I am not a criminal, but I have to suffer for the acts of those who are. Such is life.

Understandable, but pure bling. Not my thing. (Rhyme. Ha Ha)

I can see the rest to some degree, If 1st gens weren't convertible I might consider this, but in the summer I'm opened up so heat, UV, privacy aren't issues anyway.

for the people living in CA (number one crime city in the united states), there is zero tolerence for tinted windows on the front pass and driver side...this is because they (the police) want to see inside the car at night and easily during the day...horray for CA, westsidddeee

I ended up getting 35%. I mainly wanted it to match the other windows as far as color. It isn't quite as dark as the other windows, but the color is a match.

I have several different reasons for having them tinted.

1. I just like the way it looks
2. I hate being on a road trip and having my left arm getting sunburned.
3. It helps with the interior heat when you park it in the sun. The good thing is that I work out of my house and it is always parked in the garage.
4. Through my business I have to escort people and it is just easier if they aren't spotted. Stealth is the best way.
5. Tint on black.........enough said.

Actually if the front drivers and passengers windows are tinted from the factory, its ok. I found that out cause when I was driving home from Big Bear at like 1 in the morning, I got pulled over for speeding (imagine that, speeding in a 2nd generation )and he nailed me for the windows also. I went to the local police station and found out that they (police) have to compare the tint on the windows to a piece of factory tint that they SHOULD be carrying with them for just that type of thing. It would probably be easy to beat that ticket in court if you tried.

It's 30% here and they will make you peel it off on the spot if it's more.

I tried to get Toyota to match the front and rear tint but they wouldn't. Here they say if it's from the factory it's good to go.

The good news is the untinted block 94-96% of the UV and the tinted get 98% or so Toyota says. I would REALY like to match my front with the rest.

I go to UCI as well, and I have dark tint on my rear windows, and totally noticeable tint on my front windows, but I haven't been cited yet *knock on wood*. If I see cops up ahead, I normally roll down windows when weather permits, but sometimes they catch me by surprise, but they never even look in my direction They're probably use to it cause of all the soccer moms rolling around in their Benz G-classes and Escalades with limo tint all around.

I didn't mean to tint my windows so freaking dark, but I liked what my friend had on his Land Rover, so I got the same level of tint. What he forgot to tell me is that he didn't have factory tinted windows, and we have that privacy glass :pat: Oh well, looks nice, keeps the truck cool, and keeps anything in the rear from being seen.

Also, my friends used to always ask at night, "are your windows tinted?" and after I'd answer "yes", they'd proceed to stare at the occupants of the car next to us. When I'd notice, "Umm, not THAT tinted" Well, now, they can stare all they want and no one will ever see them It might even work during the day, my windows are so dark :pat:

window tint

The stupid provincial government banned front window tints (we also have to have a front license plate) so we're doomed to have tint only on windows behind the driver

I went with 50% on my fronts. It gives a nice blend from the rear to the front and you will never get pulled over.

I have to confess that I did the same, much to my chagrin. I would have liked it a bit daker but as Jason said, "... you will never get pulled over."

The '02 stats are:
OE front = 80.7%
OE rear = 28.2%
Front with 50% tint = 46.6%

Question

I just posted a similar ? on a thread about light covers. Where can I find what the laws are regarding window tint? Is there a web site that breaks down state by state what the limitations are??

Nice. i had 35 then switched it to 20 on my fronts and i never get pulled over. From what i understand as long as cops can see movement inside the front of the car ur gonna be alright. and yeah the black w/ tints look classic and clear corners/bumpers add that finishin touch.

According to the California Vehicle Code you can have 22% tint on the front windows, unless I'm reading it wrong.

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and
transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the
front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the
front seat if the following conditions are met:
(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88
percent.
Any lawyers here?
Steve
