Update:

The scoop showed up today. It looks really nice. I was afraid that it would be too tall, but I think it'll look very sharp.

My truck is still at a buddy's house sans engine, so I'll go visit it with a camera and get some pics up for folks to look at.

No holes until you guys bless it!

Just a thought...

I'm no physics expert, but have you considered installing the scoop in reverse? Sounds a little strange, but the low pressure would probably suck out hot air more efficiently with a reverse scoop, (hot air rises and moves along the ceiling of the hood - which would direct it straight out as long as there's low pressure). I don't know if it'll keep out more water.

If I could get the hood worked on, here's what I would do...

I would make a nice fat buldge in the middle leading to two of those scoops joined together to make a big reverse scoop, (way more flow than the stock setup or just one scoop). In addition, I would get one escalade fender vent, or just ask the shop to make a vent- probably way cheaper and better looking, over the intake area on the hood. If the primary goal is heat evacuation, there's a lot you can do with the hood. I wouldn't be restricted to one scoop... Especially at the price you got! Only thing is, it won't be much of a sleeper after that...

It's a good idea... and you're right, it's the _right_ idea from a physics perspective. Heat extraction is really the goal for me, but (kinda' sad to say for me!) aesthetics are a part of it as well. I don't want it looking like I tossed a Firebird hood on there - ya' know? Of course, that's not a bad thing. Hmmm...

I'll take pics with it facing front and rear and we can chat about it!

When you talk about joining two together - are you thinking having them stacked to get more height or side-by-side to get a larger opening? Hmm...

If I joined them, it would be side by side. I just drew up a quick design. Of course, the lines would be more curved, (similar to the stock scoop). That's it in a nutshell.

Keep us updated on what you plan on doing. I'm sure it'll be awesome either way!

is that your 2dr 510 hiding outside?

i have not seen that scoop in person, but it always seemed flimsy...
an easy scoop to graft is from a 90's 300zx. has 4 mounting bolts already attached and is offset to the right side and is about the same size(length is 14 1/2, width 9 3/4, height 1 1/2 inches)

...it looks like the inside dimensions are about 12" long, and from it being on those 12" squares, I'd say it's about 10" wide. That's about the same size as the one I bought, though I agree that it's beefier.

Sorry to be picky but it looks a little on the small side, facing forwards anyway. I think you may be on to something with the backward facing though... I've always liked the cowl-intake hood look, maybe if you could move it a little farther back, it could look pretty sweet depending on how well it is incorporated into the hood.

EDIT: Would it be too "ricey" to get two of them, and put them facing backwards on the outside of the hood, rather than the middle?

It might be kinda cool to ditch your bug guard and put it way far forward on your hood, almost on the leading edge. Might be able to catch some air that way too, with the scoop facing forward anyway.

I gave you my opinions earlier on this thread, but I still think you should go with two scoops. Facing front or rear is really up to you. I think facing rear would be a little more efficient at heat evacuation... Then again, I really have no clue!

If it's too small, consider sticking it directly over the intake box behind the headlight. Nothing wrong with having fresh air directed straight into your intake.

For our superchargers, heat is definitely an issue. I'll be messing with my underhood temps again soon. I plan on doing one or more of the following:

1. Direct the intake elbow straight through the parking light - dumping high pressure outside temp air into the stock airbox
2. Or, do the above mod with the current cone filter and increase the velocity of air sucked into the engine bay by having a reverse scoop installed directly behind the intake area. This along with the stock scoop will help evacuate hot air that would normally get sucked through the cone filter.
3. Cut or purchase big fender vents, (probably Escalade), install them near the top of the front fenders, cut holes directly through to the engine bay to allow for heat evacuation through the sides. Don't have to worry about water getting into your engine bay this way.
4. The above vents but fabricated on the hood itself. Any competent shop should be able to fabricate some vents on the hood that look presentable.

Whatever you decide to do, please keep us updated!

i would ditch that hood you have and get the datsun painted to match. It sticks out too much and looks like utter crap. sorry.

??? ditch the hood? That's my stock hood with an aftermarket plastic scoop sitting on it.

The Datsun's actually smaller than the one on the hood... fwiw, I'd blend it in if I went with it. It won't just be a cut & stick.


Oh... and no "sorry"'s allowed. like I say, I welcome to all opinions.

Mark, the scoop looks a little on the small side to me too (especially considering the direction you're going with your 4runner.....I'm sure we'll see HP numbers well over Dave's in no time). Even if you put that one on, I think you're probably still going to want a factory scoop look in the end.
