Well, here's the story.
I was going down a steep dirt road earlier today at about 7 or 8 mph.....so I decided to throw my truck into 1st so I wouldnt ride the brakes. Well, being the dislexic (sp?) that I am, I moved the shifter up 2 noctches instead of down
Needless to say, my truck made this horrific clanking sound and then shut off. (safety feature?) I started it up again, put it in drive, and started to drive off. It clanked pretty bad again and then started moving. By this time I was practically crying So I took her to the nearest parking lot and drove around, and now everything SEEMS to be ok.....no clanking, clunking, grinding, ect. Should I still be worried? What should I check? Thanks

LOL sorry... My friend and I used to beat the crap out of his 98 taurus... he would redline it in neutral and drop it into rev and drive. on the interstate he would drop it to first. He did everythign to that tranny/engine and it's okay. The A/T's nowadays can take a beating. Tee hee hee... That's funny stuff!!!

I did it once on accident. I was only going 4-5 mph and wanted to slip it into neutral. Went one click too far and jammed it into reverse. Mine did the same thing. It didn't make any noise, but it did stall. It took a few cranks to get it going again, though. I then proceeded to kick my own a$$ for doing something so dumb.

My friend put his auto tranny toyota truck into reverse on the freeway by accident. He said it went into gear, the tires chirped bad, and the whole thing shook. He finally got it back into drive and it turned out to be fine.

I don't think the engine has a safety feature to shut it down. I think the reverse rotation forced the engine to stop.

Phew....I'm starting to feel better. Yeah, I drove it around for another half hour afterwards and the shifting seemed to be fine....but my tires were squealing a little when making turns. (dunno if they were before the incident or not ) Other than that, everything seems ok. Thanks for the replies!

Your ok. I do that all the time with the rentals I have. Tires just screch and motor yells.

P.S Don't ever buy a rental vehicle....

Not exactly the same thing, but... I was once driving an automatic Rambler, stopped at the top of a steep incline. The engine bogged and died, and I started rolling backward toward a car approaching from behind. The power brakes were dead; pumping the pedal did nothing at all. In a final act of desperation, I rammed the shifter into Park. It locked up the wheels, and I decelerated by skidding.

Change your tranny oil and see if there are any metal shavings in the spent oil. That will be proof if anything long term happened.

i did it with my taco once. somehow missed 4th and it cut off. the worst part was that it was snowing and the taco come to a stop inches away from a light pole. sucks losing all power.

i changed the fluid and it appears fine - no metal shavings.

i swapped between 1st and R when i would get stuck in the mud all the time too. but i would release the clutch until the RPM dropped below 1500 or so...

One time my sister and I started fighting in the car on the NJ Turnpike inside my grandma's AMC Eagle. Somewhow during the fight, as I was throwing my sister into the rear seats, she kicked it into reverse going 75MPH. White smoke poured out everywhere. After 5 minutes, it restarted and off we went - with a really pissed off mom.

I was using the fancy new shifter on my dad's Lexus GX470 and noticed how easy it is move the stick into all the gears when I noticed it was in reverse, it did nothing at all but continue down the road at 45mph, oh well guess it's a safety, but haven't had the nerve to try it again.

I wouldn't worry at all. ATs are super tough these days. Many people even decend steep hills in reverse and put er down inti first or low when baking down after a failed climb. My pal does it alot in his Izuzu because it has higher gearing for an offroad 4x4. He has never had any problems, after all its just a little bit of backspin. Some reputable books even recomend this.

did it on my '88 trooper going slow. Stalled and started right back up. I could've sworn that I was in the taco recently and it kept my from going into reverse.

My buddy accidently put his 1989 Corolla into reverse going 75 mph down a canyon freeway. The strange thing is the engine stalled, and the tires locked up, but the car didn't slow down. It was almost like we were sleding down the hill. He got it started and continued down the canyon. He had the car for a few more years.

I did it once going down the street. Went for neutral and hit Reverse. Heard a clank and hit the brakes and smacked it up into N.... didn't seem to hurt anything but my transmission is screwy already.

I also did it once at highway speed on a 96 Ford Exploder. Tried to put it into N but went to R by mistake. There must be a safety feature on the tranny or something. Nothing came of it in the end but it sure freaked me out.

heh... one time i had my rear end on jacks at the tire center at sams club. i threw the car in drive and accelerated to 50mph very quickly, since the tires had no friction. my buddy then yelled at me to stop because he thought he heard a manager. so i freaked out and threw the car in park :pat:

worst sound ive ever heard, sounded like the teeth were grinding down to nothing.

oh well, truck still works fine
