The first diagram is for the 96 and up models and I would say yes The body ECU controls the timer feature. 95 and earlier models did not have a body ecu and the switch controlled the defog it was either on or off... you could manually shut it off with the switch or it would auto reset to off when you turned the key off.

I assume your truck has a rear defog so all you need to do is tap into the red wire w/black stripe coming off of position 3 on the defog relay shown in the junction block diagram here
http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/...c/relayloc.pdf
No need to worry about the timer... just don't forget the 10A fuse lol

even easier just use one of those add-a-circuit adapters installed in the defog fuse location very simple no fuss no muss provided of course there is room for it lol... this would work for any vehicle since that circuit is only alive when the defog switch is on...

I'm going to try and tackle this again and get these made... I've been dying to get these on my truck. Does anyone have pics of both 96-98 mirror glass and 99-02?

I have a 2001, a 1996, and a 2000 I can grab mirrors from and compare them.

If you don't hear back from me Jason, send me a PM to remind me and I will take pictures of the 3 of them

Here are the definitive proof pictures!

I did LOTS of research, and compared what I have to everything I have ever owned before.

There are THREE types of mirrors!

96-98 Non-heated
99 through 6/99 Heated
7/99-02 Heated

I have all three pictured, for reference:
  • Top is Left side from a 2001 Sport.
  • Middle Right side is 6/99 SR5, note the glass angle is NOT the same as the 2001, yet both the 2001 and the 6/99 are heated.
  • Bottom Right side is from a 1998 (same as a 96 I have, compared side by side as well)

I also confirmed that a 2/00 SR5 I just sold had a mirror that matched the 2001, verifying that 2000 and 2001 had identical mirror designs.

ALSO interesting, is the Bottom two mirrors have NO writing on the case.

However, the 2001 (top mirror) has writing on the outside, including the manufacturing company "MURAKAMI" which is on the bottom of the main mirror case (not on the base)

You didn't ask, but just for fun I looked at EWD's from '99 to '02, and all mirrors from those years, heated and unheated, use the same six-pin plug with the same wiring pin-outs. The unheated ones just do not use two of the six pins (pin 2 and pin 3). They are designated R20 on the left and R21 on the right, but they appear to have the same physical format.

I have never seen a 99+ that didn't have a heated mirror.....granted I haven't seen them all. I imagine maybe a 4Cyl 2WD base model with unpainted mirrors might be non-heated? Be interesting to see if anyone could confirm they had a non-heated option in 99+

Thank you! Very cool of you to help. I meant to reply sooner. I have this all worked out now and can offer signal mirrors for both styles, with amber led or red led, heated and non heated. I'll work a deal for the first few that want to try it. Send an email, etc.

Any chance of a fellow mudder has and EWD for a 99 T4R? I have a 98 and is wanting to do this conversion as I want to upgrade the mirror and auto up for the window. I have the whole wiring harness for both front doors and pic tails for the left and front kick panels

I have looked at this multiple times, and I just can't see it.

Our rig is a '00, and it has the writing on the bottom of the mirror.

Thanks !

Britt

Yours will look the same as the mirror on the top. Notice with the mirror in the middle, the angle is lower on the glass (3/4 way down, instead of 3/4 of the way up)

The mirrors with the writing on them are made by Murakami. The early mirrors, not sure who produced those.
