DO NOT PAINT IT.
1) It will look like crap in no time from chips, etc.
2) If you do paint it, the only way to do it right, would be to use stone/rock guard first, but this will give it a golfball/orange peel look with dimples.
3) Leave it alone. It goes well with the chrome "Toyota" in the middle too.

JasonB,
Yeah, i recall VinceK saying that same thing too way back when in the 4x4/Vmag days. He painted his whole front end in green. Ah! I need to find his site for Christian (96 Runner).
However, if I do have it painted, I'm going to put the remaining 3M Xpel stoneguard film on it after the paint has cured. I already put some remaining Xpel material on my hood front edge, 1/4 panel corners, under the headlights and to the sides.
...damn, 50/50!

Cool. I just think it would only look good if the "Toyota" was desert dune as well. I just think it would look funny with a painted grille and having those letters chrome.... Noone mentioned that theory yet....

jason,
though its hard to tell from the pic, but i painted the emblem (not a great job) with gloss white paint. i really stands out well and adds good contrast to the black grill.

Ahh, ok... Well, I still say leave it chrome. I also think it will be VERY HARD to match the desert dune. Silver is very tricky, plus the dune is more of a pearly it seems. Might be hard.

Bob: I just voted before I read the posts....so my vote was based on pure esthetics alone. I voted for matching it to the paint....however, from the rock chip & color matching points that Jason brings up, I have to defer to the chrome because he makes 2 valid points from a livability perspective.
David
P.S. I like the TOYOTA emblem.....sort of adds that 'old school' look of my '91 Runner to your 3rd gen.

Keep it silver.
Have you seen the 4Runners with the limited style flares, all painted desert dune? They look like a big brown blob
That's the reason I love my black flares, it helps break up the brown.
Now if your rig were black, then my answer would be different.
BTW looks great!

Very nice.
I'd say keep it chrome. It goes well with your chrome bumpers, plus it makes the grille stand out more against the body, especially since you have the modded grille.

Is there a part number for that or some specific year/model?
Thanks,

I think it looks fine either way....however, if it were mine, I would probably leave it chrome so something would match the chrome bumper....it helps tie the front end to the bumper...if it is body color, then the chrome bumper would kinda look lonely and out of place (in my opinion) Plus, the chrome makes it look more expensive where body color makes it look plastic. But to each, his own taste

I got my emblem from JT too. It's heavy cast textured chrome with black inbetween the letters. Here's the link...
FJ-40 Emblem
It does NOT come with screws...luckily my magic screw box had a pair and thick washers.

The Toyota paint colors are real nice, but tough to match. We touch up a lot of Toyota's (rock chips and scratches) and get 'close'. The Toyota owned body shop here took 3 tries to get my spoiler close. I'm sure you'll be able to find a close match, I suggest you leave your gas door at the paint shop to give them a tone reference...I did. Good luck.

The painted look appeals to me... I think because all the new car designs out there are minimizing on the chrome - take for example the '05 Tacoma X-runner we've already seen. The grille is color-matched to the rest of the truck.
Bob, the combo Satoshi grille and painted chrome will definitely be giving your rig the futuristic-retro-redesign look that all the manufacturers are doing nowadays.
