Well every since i've owned my tacoma I've hated not being able to use 5th and the sluggishness.3.58s and 33s deff not a good combination.So i've just been looking around waiting on a good deal to pop up on some gears.Well just so happens I found one only 10 mins from the house also an entire rear 4cylinder axle with 5.29s and a spool for 200.I knew if i didn't get it I was gonna miss out.I went and picked it up, everything checked out fine i was stocked.So I came home and starting tearing into the yota Heres where all the fun begins!

I crawl under the yota looking at what my easiest option would be replace the whole axle or just swapping the thirds after a bit of thinking i decided to just do the thirds since this axle needs new brakes.So I tear into it peace of cake I said, haha if only i knew what was up ahead.Ok so at this time I have the axle comepletly dissasembled gears are clean.So i start working on my own axle.I pull the axle shafts,drop the driveshaft,and pull out the third.I noticed mine has like a cage around the gears i didn't think nothing of it at the time just thought it was something for the higher gear ratios.So I continue on and apply my rtv bead around the housing,go to man handle the heavy ass diff and i was struggling getting it lined up after 10 mins i gave up and starting researching.I figured the easiest thing to do was try and drop my third into the old 5.29 axle well it won't even go into the housing.I not sure why but it still didn't hit me yet of what the exact problem was.So i was like what the hell ill just completely take my axle out from under my truck and see if i just couldn't lift it high enough.Got the axle out and went to try an put it in, was a no go.Then something caught my eye my axle shaft were longer then his so i go to measure the axle and well sure enough I have a damn v6 axle in my 4cylinder truck.So all in all i wasted 5 hrs fiddling with ˟˟˟˟ when i could have just moved his axle in place of mine.Now I have to refill 2 diff housings put together two axles and still install one under the truck.I wasted alot of time and money by not checking my axle first.all in all its been a really long day and im hitting the sheets might finish the truck tomorrow idk im so frustrated with the whole ordeal.

you shouldnt have to fill up the other axle with oil..
it won't rust or anything like that

Im keeping the axle and diff to put back in when i sell the truck one day.

no idea said it came out of an 84 yota thats all i know.The spring perches are the same so ill be swapping it in tomorrow probably.

That's your problem. Tacoma rears are not the same. They are wider and stronger than pre 95 rears.

The "4cylinder third" is an 8", your stock diff is an 8.4".
The two don't interchange. The Tacoma diffs are not referred to as 4cylinder or V6. They all came with the same thing. The only difference is 8" Elocker axle (Think TRD Elocker) or your normal 8.4" open non TRD rear (think the standard diff/axle).

Cliffs:
That pre taco 8" diff WILL NOT bolt into your 8.4 axle.

87 axle also has smaller brakes and is 3-4" narrower than your current axle.

I would say that you would be better off regearing your 8.4 3rd. Also, what are you going to do about the front? It needs to match the rear or your tcase is going to go BOOM when you put it in 4wd.

well, i got his axle under my truck and everything is working great.The power it has is amazing!!!!!Deff convinced me to keep the truck.The spool is gonna be tuff to learn how to drive,in reverse its really a bitch to turn but ill get over it.My speedo is fast by 20 mph lol anyway to fix this on the cheap?


I knew about tacomas having the 8.4 But i thought those were only the elockers.I guess I should have done some more research but no harm done if i get tired of it or it expldes I have my hole 8.4 axle

as for 4x4 I have not once locked it in the whole time ive had the truck so i choose to just not use 4wd again until i regear front end.

and yes the rear axle is a good bit narrower but ima get some spacers.
