Rear tire carrier

Has anyone ever tried to put a 2nd gen rear tire carrier on a third gen runner. My brother had one on his 90 4runner. Is this possible? Is there alot of support to carry it that would have to be added? Just a thought.

The 2nd Gen's with a rear tire carrier had additional sheet-metal in the passenger rear side to support the weight/forces of the tire carrier.

You are better off getting a new rear bumper with a tire carrier built into it.

I used to have a '91 with the rear carrier. Another problem besides the extra support in the body would be the fact that the carrier requires a latch installed on the tailgate, which would require some major modifications of the lift gate...if it's even possible (ie. license holder location, window/motor interior location etc...). And the thing squeaked like a mofo on the trail so i would definitely look aftermarket on this one.

But if you did do it, i bet you would turn a lot of heads!

Your friendly button also offers these suggestions:

Tail Gate Swap Possible?

Rear Spare Tire Swing Mount

Like DrumheadAR said as well, if you enjoy a challenge this would be a very cool mod.
