rear brakes no workee....

The rear brakes on my 96 4runner limited 4wd are not working properly.I noticed the nose dives a lot when I use the brakes. 7 the other day i felt the ABS buzzing the front wheels when I turned into a rough downhill driveway.


I removed the drum and can see the shoes move when a friend steps on the pedal. but I pulled the ABS fuse and the rear wheels will not lock up going down hill on very loose gravel. the gravel was so loose I had to use 4wd to reverse back to the pavement.


Yanking theparking brake will skid the wheels on the gravel.
and the fronts will lock up on dry pavement.

What gives, I tried new shoes and new drums, and tightened up the adjuster wheel until the shoes drag.

Im guessing its the master cylinder??

I can swap it, but isnt there some big deal to get the brakes bled using the abs pump???


Any ideas?

truck has 245K on it if it matters, Mrs Roundhouse put the last 140K on, and now she bought a turbodiesel beetle, so the Yota is mine, all mine.

Probably been like that for a while, I doubt the Mrs would even notice, but if Im gonna be driving it, all the brakes will be required, or I will crash into someone.

when was the last time the lines where flushed ?

Is it possible that there is a pinch in one of the brake lines (since the e-brake still works)?

i dont see any damage to the lines.

Havent bled the brakes in a while.


i will give it a try.

You can adjust the rear brake bias bar on the rear axle.Unlock the nutz on top and bottom of the adjuster and move it up and tighten back up for more rear brake.Definatly needed if your ride is lifted. Because it acts as a load sensor for the rear brakes.

Its not lifted, usually sags, but please tell me more about this.

The 3rd gens have a bias valve?

I have the factory electric locking diff, and the 16 in wheels, if it matters.

There is no LSPV arm to adjust on trucks with ABS.
