Re-doing dashboard

Hi
I am starting out on my custom Ipod install in my '91 runner, and was thinking about the horrible contrast between the nice smooth fiberglass mount that I made, and the textured plastic of my interior. Has anyone attempted to re-do the plastic on the dash/center console? I don't think I want to get into redoing all the rear panels, or anything like that, but the dash and the center would be nice. Hints, warnings, insults, tips....anything is appreciated. (ok, maybe not the insults) I also promise to do a full write up on it if I end up doing it. haha.
Thanks
Mark

sorry to bring up old threads (2 days ha) but i made a FG dash, then sanded most of the interior plastic smooth, and painted it the same as the outside of the car. i think it turned out pretty good except i would do things a bit different if i did it again.
here's a picture

then i added the seats and 4 gauges on the passenger side

why not use a texture-type base coat to match?
