Yesterday I was driving about 45 mph on hardball road, and a puff of white smoke or steam (not sure) came out from under the hood on the passenger side. The truck stopped accelerating. I pushed on the gas pedal, the engine reved, but did not go anywhere, while still in gear. I pulled over and killed the engine. Waited about 30 seconds, and started it up. No problems after that. It drives like it did the first day that I got it. I have no idea what happened. I looked under the hood, and nothing jumps out at me to be abnormal. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Standard or auto tranny? Sounds like you've got a slipping clutch or slipping tranny one of the two. Were you climbing a hill or anything at the time? And yes, what kind of vehicle, give us specifics... engine, tranny, year, mileage, past history, etc. in order for us to help you diagnose the problem best.

its a 93 truck. 2.4L 151000 miles, manual tranny. I was on a very slight hill. I haven't had a problem like that before. Thanks.

Sounds to me like your clutch is going out on you and youe smoked it. Pulling a hill you're putting down a good bit of power. Well, your clutch began slipping, and when you gunned it, you really made it slip ( ) and then it was sort of glazed over and wouldn't grab at all. When you pulled over, and shut the truck off, the clutch had time to cool down, and then it will grab again. I bet if you were to go take off hard and fast while slipping the clutch from a dead stop, it would do the same thing (rev but go no where). I'd start driving easy and start saving up for a clutch, at least that's how it sounds. If you're doing it yourself you'll be talking 50-150 bucks i'd imagine. Having someone do it... 300-600 bucks i'd assume.

Same thing happened to me a while back, and it turned out to be my radiator...

Yours sounds different though.
