Power steering problem
First I would like to say Hello. A friend of mine reffered me to here and told me this was the place to be if you are a Toyota inthusiest. Great site fellas!
My problem is I have an '02 Tacoma, 3.4 4x4 with NO power steering. I have replaced the Rack, and this week I have replaced the pump and I am on the 5th. pump already. First one the shaft broke. The next 4, including the one I have on now, will ONLY work until you touch the accelarator. If I start the engine cold and let it idle, I will have power steering as long as I let it idle, as soon as I try to back up... BAM it quits. I have flushed the lines, rack, and pump 3 times and have used regular fluid, trans fluid and now synthetic fluid. About to pull my hair out here... I have a 96 tacoma also and have replaced the pump with NO problems, and I have been driving it, so as to NOT damage any steering parts on my 02. Any suggestions on what to try next? I have even torn the screen out of the resavoir to see if that was the problem, and have a used one to replace it with if it is, but so far... no change. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Found the problem, the flow control valve in the pupm has been machined wrond when the pupmp was rebuilt. It was sticking all the way closed and not letting the pump build up any pressure.

Seems like I've searched the inter web high and low..seems this is a common problem, replacing the pump then not having assist at idle.. but of all the posts I've found there isn't ever really an answer!! I found this post and its the closest I've found to an answer it..but its not really an answer...GARNER if your out there what did you end up doing about your flow control valve thingy!?!?? And to anyone else how did you fix this problem? If you don't have assist at idle there really isn't any need for power steering at all IMO..so frustrating I need help??
