pcv valve question

aside from milky substance on the oil cap, what are other symptoms of a bad or improperly working pcv valve? Ive been trying to figure out a surging on my truck for quite sometime and I was under the impression the pcv had been changed but I just found out it hasnt been, so all this time ive been trying to diagnose my problem could it be the pcv? I pulled the hose off and was able to blow through it one way and not the other so it seems ok, but Im going to change it anyway. Man if it turns out to be the cause of all my problems thats going to suck(major money spent on parts) but then again Ive got all new stuff on my truck LOL. well give me some suggestions on what a pcv will cause a motor to do.
Thanks

I have 80K on my 95 3.0 and have wondered the same thing - I'd also like to know as I have a surge when ddriving. I have a major power surge at 3K RPM almost as if I was coming up on the cam or, as if the injectors were cleaning out. Any ideas on this one?

Mine does the exact same thing at about 3000 rpm, almost like a powerband on a dirtbike, as well as a surge. Hope we can get some insight. try a search of my name and check out my posts on surging and you will see everything ive replaced trying to figure it out.

Found this info on the web. I'm almost at 100K and I changed it a few months ago. For a few bucks and 30 second install...cheap insurance. The valve was working OK, but what the heck.
A neglected PCV system will soon fail to function and the result can be expensive as well as troublesome for the car owner. If the crankcase is not adequately ventilated, the motor oil will quickly become contaminated and heavy sludge accumulations will begin to form. Internal parts, not protected by the motor oil, will begin to rust and/or corrode due to the water and acids that will become trapped within the crankcase. If the PCV system is not functioning properly, the flow of crankcase vapor into the intake manifold will not be properly metered. This, in turn, will upset the fuel/air mixture for combustion and cause rough idling or even stalling of the engine. Furthermore, intake and exhaust valves, in addition to spark plugs, may well be burned and rendered useless, prematurely affecting performance and requiring expensive repairs. To assure trouble-free performance of the PCV system and, in turn, the engine and vehicle, routine maintenance of the PCV system is absolutely recommended and required.
