Smile New Guy Here

Hows it going. I just got this site from a friend of mine. I bought a 1991 4Runner SR5 last week. I am already in love. Its my first 4Runner, i have wanted one since i was 14 years old though. It has a lot of miles, 190,000 but rides exceptionally smooth. I also bought a Chiltons Guide on it. I am not a master mechanic, but i can work on a car with a guide book. If anyone out there can tell me some major things to look for with a 91, or that 2nd Gen in general i would really appreciate it.

I am glad to finally be in your world...haha. I look forward to reading and posting threads. Im glad there is a site like this out there.

I live in Lakewood WA, so if there is anyone in my area who knows a lot about them that would rock too. Thanks guys, and gals, ill talk to you later.

You're going to find a lot of cool people on here with a lot of good information. Welcome.
The first thing anyone will tell you to look at one your truck is the head gasket recall. Call the dealership and give them your vin, they can check to see if it's been done already.
Also there is some other stuff to look at. There is a seal on the steering column on the firewall that goes out so you hear the engine noise. Cheap fix.
Also the shifter seat (some sort of gasket) goes out and makes the stick pop out of gear. Another cheap fix.
Those are the ones that I have dealt with. I'm sure there is more but good luck with your new ride.

EDIT: I forgot about the metal noise when making sharp turns. Just grease the steering stops on each side. Total of 4.

Another good thing to do is to go on Ebay and look to see if anyone is selling the factory service manuals - the manuals the techs use when they're fixing up your rig.

You may need to be wary of the CD versions - I hear they're hard to navigate through and I question the legality of it. From what I hear, though... the manuals are WAAAAAAY better than Chilton's or that other one - Hayes was it?

Congrats on your new 'Yota.
You will find lots of interesting stuff regarding Toyotas here, including...MODS. Custom bumpers, sliders, CB, air tanks, hi-lifts, winch, etc, etc. No end to the fun!
Oh..watch out for Corey. You'll be broke in nothing flat!
