Lexus 4Runner...GX470. what do you think?
So what do you guyst think of this new Lexus GX-470? I have been seeing a lot of comercials for it. I think it actually looks kind of cool. It is a bit expensive though. One thing i noticed on the web site though was that it didn't appear to have HIDs. A $50,000 lexus and no HIDs? what is that. Otherwise, its not too shabby.

I could've bought either, but chose the 4Runner over the GX for several reasons:
-'Runner gets the X-REAS suspension, the most significant new technology on the vehicle according to the Chief Engineer. Check out the commercials, the GX leans like a boat while the 'Runner (Sport w/X-REAS standard) stays relatively flat during transitions. And speaking of the commercials, the trucks appear up to any task thrown at them. Time will tell if all the ECU's help or hurt.
-Liftgate vs. Side-Hinged rear.
-No third seat. I never used them in my FJ100's or Sequoia, they add ~125 lbs and cut into cargo room.
-Hundreds of lbs lighter than a GX=better performance and economy.
-Wood trim? Bah!
-Off road: 'Runner=Let's Go! GX=Be Serious! Might scratch the pearl paint!
-True, there's no free, hot meals and computer work stations in the "Customer Lounge" at Joe Blow Toyota, but how often does a Toyota need warranty work? Right...almost never. The only reason I return to Toyota or Lexus is right after delivery for the free wheel alignment. They both include free warranty loaner vehicles.
-HID's would be nice. Once you get used to them, there's no going back, they're that good. However, I don't think any Toyota/Lexus "real" SUV has ever had HID's. Ease of field repairs in the bush, you think? Toyota/Lexus HID's have self-levelers activated by servos connected to lower suspension arms. Possibly subject to off-road damage me thinks.
-A couple other reasons I don't recall, one being cost/benefit skewed toward 'Runner. I wholeheartedly agree, though, that the GX is one fine looking SUV. $8K-$10K better looking, I'm not so sure.
-Resale. I think an air suspension 'Runner will hold value better than a GX. Nationwide production of the air trucks is so low that they'll be sought-after on the used market. Handy since I buy/sell frequently.

But some how I'd feel better taking this off road than a new Lexus or 4Runner ...

2003 4runner
I test drove the limited v8 4runner today, when I went in to see how much it would cost to have the rear seals replaced on my 2000 4runnner. I have to say, I felt a little disappointed with the new 4runner.
-I thought the interior felt a little cheaper then what I currently have in my 4runner, especially the door pannels.
-The ride was a little soft for me
-Driving gave me the feeling that it was a much larger vehicle, even though I don't think it actually is. I'm very comfortable taking my current one offroad through some tight places, and this just gave me a big feeling that I came to expect driving an tahoe etc.
-I noticed on the specs, that the stock ground clearance is two inches less then the 3rd generation.
-Also if I were going to buy an sport edition, with the hoodscoop, it comes with the ugly plastic side moldings. Think Chevy Avalanche.
The moral of the story for me, is I'm going to hold onto my baby for a while, and not consider making the trade in.
I would like to drive the Lexus though, becaus I felt didn't like the feel of the interior on the 4runnner, and if I'm going to buy a vehicle that's moved away from some of its offroad roots, I might like to buy a nicer land yacht.

Since this was custom made for Tomb Raider, I really couldn't say how much was spent on it ... especially all of the custom interior that was done in Diamond Plate. But the outside only has minor changes that could be made for a few thousand dollars (not including the front and aft winches, that would be extra $$$ ... there are actually 2 winches; one Superwinch Husky Wormdriven Winch in the front and a Warn M6000 SDP Winch in the aft).
The outside is pretty much stock, all you would need to add is a Diamond Plate Package, Winch Bumper & Tail Gaurds, Mantec Snorkel, Lights and hood mounts for the spare, shovel and ax.
There are a ton of aftermarket accessories for these things when it comes to off-road performance, but don't expect to find Indiglo Gauges and Carbon Fiber Dash Kits

Better get a Defender fast. In a few years that might look like an Explorer too.
The Lexus is beautiful but not for my needs. It kills me to take my $30,000 truck through the woods. I don't know if I could do it with one twice that much.

yeah then I would have been mad, although if the price was that much, I'm not sure a lot of people would buy it, it's been called overpriced before in magazine's that i've read.
