just throwing this swap idea out there"HEMI"

this might be a very silly question but i have to know. It is at all possible to put a hemi in a 3rd gen 4runner? what do you all think.I have access to a recently wrecked dodge 1500 with a perfectly good hemi motor in it with 10k miles on it. right now its only a thought, but if it might be possible i would def. like to try it. dont get me wrong theres nothing wrong with my 3.4 but come on its a hemi....sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

what do you all think?

i dont think its a question of fuel. It would definately be unique, to say the least. I can imagine that there would be a whole ton of custom work to make that work. I don't know if the engine bay could even house something that big. Am I wrong?

Dr. Frankenstein, paging Dr. Frankenstein. The new generation Hemi has a weak bottom end - not to mention the obvious compatibility issues. Entire drivetrain would need to be swapped, stand alone ECU, etc. Also, take a look at the width of the Hemi - would likely take alot of work to fit one to a 3rd Gen.

Want to know if it will fit? No one has done it, so break out a tape measure and let us know.

IMO, you could twin turbo your 3.4 for less.

Everything is possible with a lot of money, time, and access to excellent mechanical and fabrication skills. The biggest problem I see with it (as with many other engine swaps) is that you are getting rid of a Toyota engine. Doesn't make sense to me.

If I were you, I'd take the engine and tranny and sell'em on ebay. My 0.02.

Anything is possible, but I doubt most would even venture to swap for a chevy 350 let alone a Hemi. For the money most would be opting for a more modern approach like creating boost or adding NOS rather than just adding cubic inches. I can't imagine what the gas mileage would look like.

Definately would peg the redneck meter IMHO.

all the other "small" stuff : oh thats a good one!

I dought you could fit it between the fender wells. MY guess your looking at a 3" BL to fit it. Wireing would be an abslolute nightmare.

and i suppose you lose 4x4? unless you go with some other bolt up GM tranny/transfer case combo?

my guess is youd have to relocate everything underneet to fit it. All new suspension on the front end to carry the beast.

i just dont see the point.

I drive my toyota's for there drivetrain, not there stunning looks. you go repalceing all the drivetrain, you might as well wrapped it on some GM sheetmetal also.

Nice idea, although there's a lot to consider other than just the physical engine size. A few years back, I swapped a 302 V8 into a Ford Ranger truck and even went to far as to buy a complete swap kit from Advanced Adapters. The engine fit pretty well, and obviously it wasn't nearly as wide as the Hemi.

I spent about $5000 on the whole thing and even was able to keep most of the drive train (except the tranny)! There was no room for the A/C system and I LOST my 4X4 control altogether! Man, was I dissappointed!!! The Hemi is definitely something awesome to dream about...but it would probably turn out to be a nightmare!

The Hemi is cool if you want a car engine and you like domestic junk. The Hemi's peak HP is at 5600 RPM, peak torque at 4200 RPM. Plus when your tranny goes who do you take it to, chrysler or toyota to get it fixed?

sell the hemi engine and transmission. use the money to get a supercharger and URD fuel kit for the 3.4L and a valve body upgrade for the transmission (about $3300 total). that will be cheaper than the expense of swapping over to a crappy dodge/chrysler V8 with a problematic slushbox in the long run. you'd maintain your toyota dependability, have about 300HP and 300ft-lb of torque, and would have some decent resale value if you ever wanted to go back to stock and sell off the goodies and then sell the runner.

lawnmower

Hey I can turn your lawn mower into a Corvette. Hell I could build you a helicopter out of your Blender. There are only 2 questions to ask when doing this how much money you want to spend and why in the world would you want to do it? Some say just to see if it can be done and with enough money and resources to throw at something there is just about nothing short of time travel and teleportation that cant be done. I think if you want a Hemi go buy a truck with a Hemi in it. My brother in law has one, real nice truck if you like that sort of thing. I think it costs Dodge probably $25,000 USD to build a Hemi truck and I bet that it would cost you close to that to build yours even with the free engine and tranny. Just my .02 cents and that is all I would invest in swapping a Hemi into my Toy

my dad dealt with late model christler and GM products when I was growing up. We went though 3 of christler and its branches vheicles all the motors blew at less than 40 thousand. Then my dad bought a 97' asto van. with a V6 truck power train. motor blew at 60,000 put a new one in ran ok for another 40k started running rough.... new trans, alt, radiator, so on and so forth. well now we have a 95' 4runner 186k (mine) 96' 4runner my dad's 121K both are in great shape. Why is that you might ask. Where not horribly gental on them. It's just there not american drivetrains. Sorry to be so sinical twards the Made in U.S.A cars but its the truth.
