Natalie,
The largest issue I am aware of in this year range is the V6 head gasket issue/recall. Be sure to run the VIN across a Toyota dealership and check if the recal was ever completed. If there is issues with overheating and or lost compression (poor power) this may be the contributing issue.
Good luck.

For the 2nd Generation 4runners, (which is what you're looking for according to the years) The major problem is the sagging of the rear coils. You can tell straight off if the rear looks like it's *sagging* or sitting a lot lower than the front.
Question, why are you looking between 90-93? What is your price range? Because you can get some pretty cheap 3rd Generation 4runners now a days. And what about he last few years for the 2nds (94-95)?

The 4Runner has 31"x10.5" BFGoodrich Mud Terrains they are like new. Muffler is Borla stainless steel (million mile warranty).
The interior is grey and very clean, and has a Sony Cass. Stereo
The exterior has a little rust on the rocker panels. It has 150,000 miles, but still runs and shifts like new. It does not leak or burn any oil. It has a recent brake job and front tie rod ends. It drives very nice and goes great off road. It has a trailer hitch and wiring.
Very reliable.
