mine just turned over 171k with zero maintenance. I just make sure the auto tranny fluid is full and is changed when it is supposed to be. I own a 97 4runner

These are seriously awesome numbers people! Thanks! it proves that my hunch about these automatics are incredibly well built!

NEVER have I seen another car makers automatics go this far.. Usually about 150K is max before they usually grenade or start slipping badly.

Simply amazing!

I'm considering getting my tranny fluid and filter changed as preventative maintenance at 100K. Asking local people where I should go gets me some "don't do it" talk. But I don't see anyone here saying oh i got my fluid changed and my tranny died. It's almost as if the general consensus is do it or don't do it the end result is the same. Which is many trouble free miles. Am I wrong?

The only time you shouldn't change the transmission fluid or flush it is when the fluid is in REALLY bad shape (burnt, brown, little metal flakes, etc).

When you have the above issues your transmission is dead it just hasn't realized it yet. When you flush a transmission in this shape the new fluid washes away all the varnish and gunk that's keeping it working.

But if your transmission fluid is nice and red or just slightly off red, there is no problem changing it.

That being said, I have a 2001 4runner 4WD with 250,000 miles on it, 75% of which are highway. Every 30K miles I do a flush via dillution which is where every weekend for that month I drain the transmission pan and refill it. So by the end the 4th change there is no old fluid left. I don't trust shops that do a flush because allot of them use a detergent which does more harm than good and a properly maintained transmission should never need any type of "detergent" to clean it.

97 3.4l 4runner 4wd - 138,000 Miles
Just the normal fluid changes and a flush when I bought her at 70,000.

I plan on doing an external tranny cooler to bypass the in-radiator cooler just to be safe.

Thanks for the input, I'm gonna go ahead and get the fluid swapped out. Should I change the filter as well?

Not letting the thread stall on a bad note...... 98' 4runner SR5 104k, owned it sense 60k, so I don't think the tranny has ever been flushed..the original owner(I am 2nd) kept it immaculate so maybe he did... Getting the flush next week..tranny seems to slip a little sometimes on the highway at high speeds when I let off the gas for a second then accelerate...but other than that all is well.....

That may be the O/D kicking in at out... the T/C locks up right around 50 MPH and will sometimes unlock if you are coasting/cruising at a certain speed and then apply throttle

Just turned 160k on my 2002. S'all good except it slips a bit from 2nd to 3rd..
