Hayden Transmission Cooler installation
After researching transmission coolers and discovering that it's hard to over-cool transmission fluid, I decided that bigger is better and purchased a Hayden 679 30K lb class Transaver Plus from http://www.dcflags.com/MM001.ASP?pageno=84. Before making the online purchase I measured the best I could with the grill in place and everything appeared like it would fit.
First, I need to decide which was the inlet and output of the radiator trans cooler. I followed hoses back and forth and finally decided that the drivers side was the output. I removed the hose from the drivers side, put a tempory hose from there into a bucked and placed the hose from the transmission line into a separate bucket and started the engine. Sure enough, the driver's side is the output side of the radiator. Now I know where the hoses need to go, let's mount it and button it up!
Well, the 679 is just too big! After removing the grill and hood release I discovered that the hood release bracket is a little deeper at the top than it appears from the front. Now I have this cooler and everything apart, it's going in! I ended up installing it with the hoses coming out the top, that gave me the fraction of an inch I needed to clear the hood release bracket. A run to autozone for more hose, and I'm in business.
The digital camera was out so I took some 35mm shots, I'll finish the roll turkey day and post them if anyone is interested. But, if you are looking for a trans cooler for a 2001 tacoma, the 678 will fit a whole lot better!
