So if the new 02 skid plate can be found as cheap as pdfaxe says, how do we find out if we can retrofit it on 2000 and under model years?

I second that question. I'm realyl curious, I would love to add that peice to my Runner. The best part is it's not half as expensive as most of the mods. I have in mind.

I dont see why it wouldnt work. Go to a dealer, crawl under one, see how it bolts up.

Sounds like a plan Adam F. Seems like the only way I'm going to really know is to see for myslf. I'm going to be really disappointed if I find something it's bolted onto that I don't have to match under mine. But oh well it's worth a shot. I might be able to find a way to MAKE IT WORK for me.

OK, does anyone have a stock number on this item yet?

I just placed an order with Jay Mark's for some other things, ans was going to order this "brush guard" also.

But they quoted me a price of: $379.01!!!!

I was stunned! Has anyone found it yet for the super low price that pdfaxe got it for?

has anyone changed a skid plate on a 92 runner i recently hit a tree stump and inverted mine.

I was tinking about buying one from the dealer ship but I had second thoughts because I would like an aluminum skid plate or posibly getting one chromed.

any thoughts?

I can't see how a small piece of aluminum can cost that much?!?

As stated in prior posts. I don't have the part number. I didn't have it when I ordered it. I just told them I was looking for the aluminum skid plate(gravel guard) that is an option on the '02 sport edition. They knew what I was talking about. I ordered mine around April before any dealer had them in stock. My local dealer quoted me $77. I searched on line and found Jay Marks Toyota and they quoted me $47. It was on order for several weeks. If the price is what Im hearing, the only thing I can think of is that when I inquired, maybe the dealers didn't have a set price from Toyota as to what to sell it for or people are asking for the wrong part. I like the part but I sure wouldn't drop 3 or 4 c-notes for it.

Guys, I checked out an '02 4Runner, and the spiffy aluminum thing bolts on with 2 bolts, right to the 2 stock tow hooks. Sooooo, if you have tow hooks, then it will bolt right up. Don't have tow hooks? Get some.



But this thing will bend as soon as you hit any decent sized rock.

One for a '92 is readily available at a junkyard. The same part is on all 4Runners and trucks made from '86 to '95. Chromed???! If you are serious try taking a wire brush bit for an electric drill and taking off the dirt and paint, then clearcoat it with a spraypaint style product.

The '02 on the other hand will not be found used. $379 sounds about right for it. For that much you can have a tough burly indestructable one made. What's so great about the 02 plate anyway? Maybe pdfaxe got one at dealer cost, or maybe hes just mwssing with you.

Very true JX......Im just messing with everyone. I have all the time in the world to tease everyone. Actually, there's nothing that "great" about the '02 skid. It's just a show piece and not for off road use. But, if you look at my ride, you'll see that mine is a show truck. I don't take mine off road. I enter it in car/truck shows. I think the dealers are the ones messing with people if they are charging almost $400 for it. And....I guess it's my fault that I only paid $47 (+ shipping) when they first were available. You could probably make your own show piece for less. Anyway....Im I'll get off the soap box and let someone else have a turn.

I knew it was too good to be true. Anyone who has bought any parts from a dealer knows that they cost about 2 or 3 times as much as they are worth.

its really a misnomer to call those things skid plates. I think their main function is to keep water and road splash off of the fan and alternator belts; and to discourage you from doing your own maintainence. Mine was sent to the garbage dump years ago, I don't miss it.

A better name for that part would be , "Gravel shield" or as someone on ODW named it, "Bunny Deflector." If you hit anything harder than a bunny with it you will have to scrap it and get another or just leave it off.

Actually...Toyota calls it a "gravel gaurd". I guess they know its capabilities....

the skid plates on my taco are tough. those ones on the '02 are definatly not. one time i bottomed out fairly hard on the skid plate... thought maybe it was dented/bent, but when i looked at it, there was only a scratch.

The newer 4Runners 96-02 and Tacoma skid plates are indeed much more durable than previous years. They actually hold up quite well to light to medium rock abuse.
