These things are great!! I need to finish aiming them though. I have one problem, hopefully you guys can help me. When I wired them up, I did it the legal way so they only come on when the highbeams are on, no matter the switch position. I used my voltmeter on the headlight harness to find the highbeam wire. I was surprised to find out that on my 00 4runner sr5, when the high beams are turned on, the red wire gets 12 volts, when the low beams are on, another wire gets 12 volts. I thought that I had switched ground, well, its reading 12 volts, so I thought I would tap into that for the driving light relay. Ok so, now all is set up great. I turn the DL switch off, test my high beams and low beams, and off position, driving lights stay off, GOOD! Ok, so I turn the DL switch on, everything works fine. NOW, when I do the same tests with the car actually on, the driving lights come back on when the parking lights are on. I got my voltmeter out, and the highbeam wire had .7 volts. Is this enough to turn on the relay? Do I need any resistors or diodes in this setup? Sorry for such a long post, hahaha.

I think you just got the power lead hooked up to the wrong 12V source. Look/test them again.

but why would it work fine with the car off, and weird with it on?

a diode would work, but its best to find the route of the problem.... the wire you should be tapping off should be red/green

i have a thread on ehre about aux wiring has some good info on it.... i have 2 diodes in my system as i have the ligths set to come on with my highbeams and come on independently with a switch in the cab.....

I am tapping off of a red wire with a stripe, I think its either blue or green, well has to be the right one because theres only one red wire there. Mine is set up to come on automatically with the high beams, but only if the hella switch is set to 'On". Wire comes from red headlight wire, to hella switch, to relay pin 86. I have both lights with seperate 12g wire to the 87 terminals. Ground is 85, Power is 30

I tested it again, with the truck on, all 3 wires to the headlight have 14v?? This is weird. I tapped the wire at the actual harness, I have heard you have to tap in the steering column, is it possible to do that without removing the column cover? And what wires would I tap? Any diodes needed? Thanks

I FIGURED IT OUT!!! Not to yell or anything, lol, but I'm glad. I guess if you think about something long enough, you will figure it out. Turns out my drl's were triggering the relay for the 550's. I thought I disabled the drl's before by unplugging the harness in the engine compartment, but that doesn't disable them, it just turns off the bulbs. You actually have to get under the dash and cut a wire to truly disable the whole drl system.

So, how does this work then? You have no DRL's now?

yup. I disabled the drls a long time ago, but I didnt disable them the "proper" way before, now that I cut the wire, everything works fine, Ill have to take pictures. Im wired, lol, painless fuse box, hella relay box. Its nice to have all my extra stuff out of the OEM wiring!
