after looking for all types of mods and spending time reading countless posts on fun stuff. I think the best way to get power and gas milage back to use stock tires, for me 225's. ya they will be small. I'll do my best with envy issues...here is the deal I live in san diego and drive my truck to mammoth, tahoe, canada and colorado.
I would like to trade my GOODYEAR WRANGLER RT/S 31x10.5r15lt (25k on them a little better than 1/2 tread)
For these tires I would like comperable 225 75 15 snow/ mud&snow/ wet weather or something a step up from stock street tires. if you have any interest or ideas please advise.

Remember 225's are really tiny looking on a 4Runner. At least put 235's on or even 245's. I got 255-70R15's on mine and although they don't look as good as 31's. They look decent enough for me.

I did that swap a while back. I had some perfectly good 31's but I traded them for 225/75's and I haven't had a smooth highway ride since then. I think I got jynxed. I've had 3 sets of tires since then and nothing's worked. Plus those P-metric's don't hold up to shards of rock very well. One weaseled it's way under a tread block on an easy trail and it couldn't be repaired--it tore out a big chunk of cord.

Try as I might, I can't tell any performance difference between 225/75's and 31x10.50's on my truck. I'm never trading again!

I switched back to 235's mud tires when I had my '87 turbo 4runner. I had first purchased 31's to replace my worn out 225's and at first I liked them. After the 'cool' looking factor wore out, I started noticing the 'gas' and the 'weak' factor. That's when I switched to 235's and I was very happy, getting back in my gearing range and gas mileage wise.

it seems like 31's are the norm. my truck came with pizza cutters (225's) and running it with 31 makes the whole truck seem really heavy. howerver I like the look and the posts here lead me to believe I would not get a whole lot out of the switch.... if anyone has more info I'll be up late

so of course I posted a new thread with my answer and not a reply as I am now doing ( what a jack ass )

Hey Hilandfrog,
Are you sure that your truck came from the factory with the 225's? you can check on your inside driver's door panel to see what your axle code is and then check this site to see what your actual gearing is.. Axle gearing
So, before you really do switch you can figure what would be optimal for power and fuel efficiency for your truck.

Are you sure that your axle code is B04B ? It usually starts with a G...And according to that site that I provided, it says that B, which = 145mm is not in pickups or 4runners. So I wonder why yours says B? and if the 2nd and 3rd really are those numbers, your gearing would be 3.56.....Doesn't make sense.

didn't make any sense to me either. tomorrow I will be putting warn manual hubs on and will look for more #'s while I'm down there.
anyone have any ideas on a towing set up. I looked on trail master and saw a straight bar system so I might do a little welding and make the A-bar system myself......stop me if you see any problems. thanks
