Four Cylinder 4Runner questions .(newbie )

Hello people !

I`m a new member to the forum and I`m thinking of buying a 4runner . I would like your know the following information .

What years was the 4runner made with a 4 cylinder ?

How reliable is the 4 cylinder model ?

Any inherent problems with the 4runner with a 4 cylinder ?

How much better is the 2.4L vs 2.7L ?

Whay should I look for when looking at a used 4runner ?

I`m looking for a 4 cylinder becaus I`m looking for a true 4x4 to commute . I travel 30k to 35k a year so gas mileage is very important .

Any other comments are welcome

well it all depends on what years you are looking at.
84-89 1st gens were all available with the 22R (84 only) or the Fuel Injected 22RE.
90-95 2nd gens were available with the 22RE for maybe only until 92 or so (im not sure so dont quote me).
the 22RE is pretty low on power but is said to be bulletproof if taken care of properly
now, 96-2002 3rd gens were available with the 2.7L I4 up until 2000 I believe. the 2.7 makes about 150HP and 177 ft. lbs. of torque (same power as previous 3.0 V6 found in 1st and 2nd gens) personally, im pretty happy with my 98 with the 2.7, with the 5 speed, the power is by no means shocking, but it can surprise you when you think about the weight of the 4runner
maybe someone might have some more to add if i missed anything

From 85 on the 22RE was standard on US 4Runners, therefore 84 is the only year with the 22R...

When I first bought mine (2000 2.7), I could lightly hold the brake, hit the gas, and absolutely smoke the right rear tire. That was with the insanely small tire package though. So as long as you don't put 33s on it, you'll be fine with the power. Gas mileage when it was stock was around 22 with a few 24 tanks here and there.

Loaded with gear and 4 people going up a hill in the mountains trying to pass a big rig...if that is of no concern to you then the 2.7 will suit you nicely.
