Feelings on the 3.4L (5VZ-FE)

Having owned a few toyotas now, my oppinion on the 3.4L motor is very high. I can't say enough about this motor and the durability it offers. My mileage on my current 4runner is close to 150K and its very strong. Why did toyota move away it and bring in the 4.0 L (1GR-FE)???? It perplexes me. What are your oppinions on the new offerings from Toyota.. ie: 4.0, 4.7 ??

Yota is right, folks want more power. I mean, the new Tundra has a 381 hp engine! That's 50 more horses than the hottest sports car on the market had in the 1980's !

I love the 3.4 it's a 24 valve 4 cam masterpiece. Mine has 213,000 on it and it runs like new.

Ice,

Here's some secrets to longevity in these Toyota engines.

-Never miss a 30,000 miles service. It's easier than you think, you can do it yourself.

-5,000 miles oil changes, minimum. Drain & refill the ATF in the pan at the same time.

-NEVER ignore the Check Engine Light. Have your vehicle checked with a code reader at least once a year, even if the CEL is not on.

-NEVER try to save money by not replacing an Oyxgen sensor or a MAF sensor. These sensors read and adjust the fuel/air ratio. This is super critical.

-Use BG44K fuel injector cleaner.

-Use factory Toyota parts. Yes, they are expensive. Anyone who wants a cheap car, should buy a Ford Focus.

Very good advice, here is what i'm doing so far for my 99' sr5 3.4L :

-I do the "drain and fill" for the trans (4 to 5 quarts) about every 5,000 to 10,000 Miles and the way I see it I'll eventually be running Clean TRANs fluid and won't have to drop the pan so often (and risk a pan seal leak.)
- I replace the rear and front differential and transfer case with M1 75W -90 Gear Lube every 40K
- Also I use Mobil 1 chassis grease for the grease filltings for the u joints and double cardan's under the car about every 10K
-I also run Mobil 1 Synthetic oil and a oversized M1 oil filter about every 5K to 7K....you can safely go longer with the interval by being a "Synner"...
-I'm with you on the O2 sensor as I just replaced the "Before catty 02". With chicago salt, a suprizingly Bi'ach of a job!!
-I am religious about changing the spark plugs every 30K to 40K and I also clean the air intake ducting, MAF and the throttle body evey 20K

I made it to 140 K "without a hitch" and I like your advice and I am going to try and keep my runner as long as I can....
Its PROUDLY payed off!!
Not new, but definatly not dead either !!
knock on wood!!

I was alittle hesitant towing 3500-4000 lbs from Cali to Texas and to my surprise she did very well...although on some the hilly climbs she did struggle alittle. She didnt burn a single drop of oil and the atf was bright red. I love my truck.
