Steve-

How sure are you that this is a 4.30?

2.7 Liter engine with the 265 tire option. Other wise they got the 3.70's and the really really small tires.

100%, Pull the code and see.

If it's a factrory Auto from a V6 and an e-locker, it has 4.30's.

Around here I found a lot of the limiteds (auto w/ e-locker) had the 4.10 code. I just did a quick search on car-part.com and there are a lot of 4.10 rear 3rds with e-lockers, but there are twice as many with 4.30s. There are even a couple listed as having 4.56 gears.

Swapping out the whole rear axle is a fun two-man job. Very straight forward wrenching. Swapping out the IFS diff is not that hard either. BTW, I really like the 4.30s with my 265/75R16s.

(Includes electronics) - That really makes this a sweet deal. If possible, make sure you get the Dash switch, dash switch plug with pigtails, ECU, ECU plug with pigtails, and the wiring from below the rear seat all the way to the rear diff, including both of the plugs/pigtails prior to the harness that goes under the rig. That will make the wiring pretty straight forward.

Pull the third and count the ring gear teeth, 43 teeth and 10 pinion teeth is a 4.30 ratio. That is what I had to do when I bought my e-locker axle with 4.30's and also the front diff. Skip the locker ecu and just get the Inchworm wiring kit and then you can run the locker in 2wd also. If you are worried about the axleshafts, use the shafts from the axle you have now-I also did this since the rear axle that I bought did not come with the axleshafts.

You put the e-locker in yourself Brett? How much were you out of pocket?

For the entire rear axle housing with 4.30 gears and e-locker and also the entire front diff with 4.30 gears, and I also purchased 4 new axle seals, I was out $1000. They came out of a wrecked 4Runner with 17k miles on it-lite rollover-I saw the vehicle, the axleshafts were used on a different 4Runner, so nothing was bent. The inchworm wiring kit I think was about $70 and Tom (Trailcarnage) help me swap the rear axle and front diff. It took us about 8 hours including lunch and breaks.

I now have my original front diff and rear axle with 3.90's sitting in the garage.

The ring gear will also have a number stamped on it (at least mine did). 43 = 4.30

4.56 on your 4Runner would techincally be perfect for a 285. 4.30 is quite close and I don't think you would ever really notice the difference.

Now 4.88's would have let you go to a 315. If you try that you'll be back in the same boat you were with the 4.10's and 285's.

Wait till you see then tomorrow, they are HUGE.
