Diesel Question/Opinion

My v6 engine is reaching its end, and i want to convert to diesel. i have access to both a 3l and a 2lt engine, which do you think is a better choice. and also does anyone know the specs for 1l's, 2lt's, and 3l's as far as torq and hp?
thanks

Try a search. There's been quite a bit of doscussion here before. The best information is going to be at Toyota Diesel Madness.

you've got some work ahead of you, the diesels don't bolt in like they would in a 22R truck. the 3L is a better motor though

yes, diesel is more efficient typically. i like it because of its ability to run on pretty much any oily substance and the simplicity compared to a gasoline engine(except for injector pumps!)

Diesel

I have been researching the same thing.
My 1st V6 3.0L died @ 269,000 miles. My second V6 from ATK engines(they suck!!!), is on its way out due to chronic low oil pressure. It only has 30,000 miles on it. It could die tomorrow or in 5 years from now, who knows? So. I too am preparing for THAT day.
The closest thing I could say is to go with a 1KZ-T, 1KZ-TE, or the new 1KD-FTV. Of course all of these engines would have to be imported. My fear with the new ones is the electronic stuff, if they break, well who here knows how to repair it. On the same token, I have had 300,000 miles with my electronics W/O any problems.
The 1KZ-T is a mechanical fuel injection, no computer stuff, but you loose HP & Torque.
1KZ-T : 125 HP, 218 ft/lbs torque
1KZ-TE: 143HP, 253 ft/lbs torque
1KD-FTV: 167 HP, 259ft/lbs torque

They all bolt up to the R150F tranny found on our V6's
You would need to Fab up some engine mounts & import all the electronics.

Later,

Pablo

I would recommend you the 1KZT engine.
My 4Runner have that engine and I've done to it 280,000 km (Near 174,000 miles) and only had a problem.

When it had 200,000 km (124,000 miles) the cylinder head begin to crack and I changed it.
Anyways, that has been the only breakdown I've had in 10 years! (I hope the next truck I buy will be as good as that!)

I still have the stock clutch and it is in good shape.

1KZT has a lot of torque at very low rpm's, don't drink too may gas-oil and you can give a lot more torque if you put an intercooler and it's easily done.

You can import it from Europe, Australia, Japan or South America.

David

PS: This is my engine (After wheeling )

I would suggest using the 3L engine. It is stronger than the 2LT and you can always mount a turbo afterwards.
I did this for a guy last year,he drives a Hilux doublecab with 3L-T now.
Excellent drive compared to the 2L-T, way more torque. The 3L engine also has a 9lbs heavier flywheel.
I agree the 1K engines are stronger, but they are more expensive and harder to find. Plus if it is the common rail injection model you will need to get the OEM harness, ECU and some other stuff to get it to work. So this means you would have to buy a compleet front clip or vehicle.
I did a lot of diesel swaps and I would not tackle this without a complete OEM set of parts.

The 1KZ-TE is a high-pressure fuel rail type. The 1KD-FTV is the common-rail direct injection type. The 1KD-FTV uses the 1KZ-TE block but has a different head, turbo, and electronics.

Yes, you'll need a complete front-clip or half-cut, as they call it in Japan. You'll also need to make sure that the engine came from one with a manual tranny. Otherwise, you'll have problems with the ECU because the ECU controls the ECT of the auto tranny.

1kz-t

Hello to everyone, im in Buffalo NY and have my first 1KZ-T on it way. No electronic stuff. What i have researched better than all the 2 and 3L as they had alot of problems with heads but i guess the later ones 3L's were fixed. I was about to get a 3L and turbo it but to be real it was going to cost just as much as the 1KZ-T, the turbo on the 3L just throught it up there. You still get more torque out of the 3.0 at 1800-2400 perfect for stock rear in a pickup! i have one 302 V8 extra that runs perfect with 20,000 the motor but uses gas, 14 to the gal with 33`. Im selling it to much stuff! P.S. anyone has advice or parts for fuel system and glow timer im in need. cheers to all!

Which fuel system parts? Dieselpump? Injectionpump?
If you have a VIN I can probably get you the schematics for that engine or maybe I can copy or scan the OEM manual.

couldn't you just rig up a switch for your glow plug timer, like an older tractor?
