so I want to see what people have had experience with regarding 02 sensors...

I plan on replacing my front sensor, along with new plugs and wires from http://sparkplugs.com/

So far I'm ordering:

(6) NGK Multi-ground Plug 4302 BKR5EKPB-11 $8.95 $53.70
(1) NGK Premium wire set 4412 TE66 $27.76 $27.76

but I'm completely confused on the 02 sensor...

Denso AIR/FUEL SENSOR 234-9002 234-9002 $162.05
NGK OE identical O2 sensor 24554 24554 $87.85

both are what the site gives me for 1999 Toyota 4-Runner, V6 - 3.4L - FI - 5VZFE, California Spec, 4WD,

PICS: left = denso and right = NGK (only gives plug)


anyone have any ideas?? that price is lower than from anywhere else.. too good to be true?

Are you sure your truck is CA spec? The difference in the cost of the front sensor between CA and "49 state" would track with the difference between the NGK and the Denso.

A lot of folks have had issues with running non-Denso sensors, but some folks have been okay.

Generally the call is to run Denso, but you may want to check your VIN and be sure that the truck is CA.

those two prices on NGK and Denso are both for CA-spec anyway... that's why I'm confused...

A sticker under the hood says it complies with California regulations, so I'm assuming that it is CA-spec

elton, thanks for the link, its same part #, cost a couple bucks more, not a big deal.... but I guess the true question is regarding the NGK sensor... I still can't find any info on that, which I guess almost answers that question

If you have a Cali spec 4runner, the answer is no, the Denso is what you should be using.
The NGK is a regular O2 sensor......but it sounds like you figured that out on your own already.

k... i guess I will bite the bullet and get the Denso... general consensus seems to be that NGK is listed incorrectly on their site as suitable for CA

Correct.

If it was the right one the NGK would say Air/Fuel sensor also not O2 sensor.
Make sure your truck is Cali spec though before ordering.

If you were replacing the rear O2 sensor, the NGK would probably be fine.

ok, now I'm really confused... and frustrated... the sticker says it meets CA regulations. To check I called 7 Toyota dealers in MI, all are closed at noon (3:30 now) so time-zone difference, I call Cali, they transfer me a million times and won't run it... finally get a dealer to transfer me to sales, they tell me its a 48spec and to order 89465-80034 but no x-ref... then i call Toyota direct at 18003314331, they confirm that its a 48 spec... so what does that sticker mean?? I am now assuming its a "regular" 4runner...


EDIT: k, i'm dumb.. all that hassle, just went outside in the blowing snow and looked under, tada >> ONE cat, so its not CALI!!!! and the O2 sensor doesn't rape me YAY!!!!

edit again, now I'm finding a lot of different posts of people with 99's about an A/F sensor and not the O2... whatever, I'm just gonna wait till its warmer, take out some sensors, see what they are, and call it good... later, i dont have a CEL yet anyway
