Deckplate
I plan to do the deckplate mod on my 97 limited 4runner but have a question about the deckplate itself. i plan to buy it from here: http://www.beckson.com/dp40.html for its cheap price but i need to know wether to order the one with screw holes or without? black, the color of my airbox, only comes w/o holes but i dont really care the color if i need one w/ scre holes since it wont really be visible
thanks

It's too easy to suck water into your intake if you go through some water and it splashes into the engine comparment. It's best to close the deckplate on rainy days and for water crossings.

I cut a big 6"x6" or so square out of the front of my airbox, and covered it in mesh. I don't off-road (2wd), and I live in SoCal so it doesn't rain too much, but I haven't had any problems so far.

IMO, open cone elements are designed primarily for street and dry offroad (desert) racing. I wouldn't doubt that you'd be in big trouble if you tried a water crossing with just a cone filter, versus an deckplated airbox with the plate in. It's still a risk, but much less of one. But whatever, I just did mine for the noise...

I dont mean to hijack the thread but i have heard of people opening the top of the airbox. Now are you removing the top of the airbox or just opening it? Does it clear the hood?

How often are you in water that is over your hood? That you are seriously driving through, not splashing through? I guess I am just trying to play devil's advicate as I rack peoples brains about this mod. I mean, why not just get a snorkle (besides the price)
