catastrophic transmission failure

Tranny is completely nuked. Fuild looks great, but pan is filled with metal. Tranny sounds like its filled with marbles. Thinking of sending it off the IPT. Thoughts please.

besides that I am SOL or screwed.

thanks

I was quoted $2812 for a Toyota rebuilt trans from the Toyota service center. It carries a 1 year unlimited mile warranty This is with torque converter.

A Jasper remanufactured tranny, cost unknown, would have a 3year/75,000 mile warranty.

A Transmasters tranny rebuild, cost depends on damage, would also have a 3 year/ 75,000 mile warranty.

Anyone have experience with any of these names?

thanks

*edit* the transmasters warranty is only 1 year 12,000 miles or 2 year 24,000 miles for $300-$500 more. The other warranty is for Jasper tranny installed by Transmasters.

Yeah for real, throw me some info. I've had the valve body stick and make mine melt. It might be doing it again. I went to a Mr. Transmission. I got a 6 month dont remember milage warranty for around $3000. I know, I think I got ripped off, but if it goes out again does that mean that I can tell him to give me a refund and take his transmission back?

(Sorry to hijack, transmissions are stressful)

have you thought about finding one at a salvage yard for $400-500 and then taking your chances after a good flush????

you could also potentially find one on here or other boards from people parting out runners or tacomas w/ a A340F Automatic Trans

Yep. So far I have been quoted $750-$1500 from online searches. I am still looking though and want/need all input.

thanks

well, too bad he has a 01. those are only good for a swap up to 99. i guess they changed them in 00???? maybe you need to check w/ the dealer on that to see what changed. if it's a TQ converter or bellhousing, then it won't matter - you could possibly use your old one. if it's an internal change that isn't compatable w/ your ECU, then you'd better just find one from an 01 or 02...

Jasper list a A340F for the 2001 4Runner, stock # 5401590.

Your tranny type should be on your production label.

You might try giving Boost Logic in Austin, TX a call to see if they can help you. For a while they were charging $1800 for a race built 2wd a340x and when I called them they said they thought they could work on our transmission.

From talking to serveral people, it appears I have to use an 01 or 02 tranny. They also said it was a crossover year and there are several variants.

Boost Logic, Sound Performance, and STC Performance Engineering all make great Supra A340 transmissions. I am pretty sure their pricing does not include torque converter.

****STC Performance Engineering offers a 1 year unlimited milage warranty. I will give these all these guys a call and report back later today.

You guys must have some decent salvage yards in CA with low mile 01-02 Tacomas or 4runners in them. I would certainly go that route rather than doing a rebuild because one small mistake in the rebuilding process and you can easily nuke the rebuilt tranny and they cost about 3-4 times as much as a used one.
