Folks, we're talking about saving money. Getting the TRD package for the shocks and the locker still would cost more than buying some shocks and getting an ARB.
I completely disagree here. The TRD package is ~1300 new when combined w/ the SR5 package. It is worth about $750 on a used truck according to NADA.

ARB is $650+ ~150-200 for install, shocks will run another $200-300 for Billies.

So explain how it's cheaper?

Don't forget the ARB compressor if you want to keep the warranty on the locker.

Thats what I was saying, how could a $1300 package be worth $3K used? Now $3k is the difference between a prerunner sr5 and a 4wd sr5. I think that is what he was quoted.

Go with the e-locker. I really like mine it is has been plenty durable with what I have thrown at it. Plus, with the first ARB install in a truck you always have the added headache of having to by a compressor (about another $200+) and install that. ARBs are great, but buy something covered, installed and strong, and focus on additional mods.

i guess people have been voting here without looking at the dates...

you've probably already made up your mind by now, but i'll throw in my $0.02 for future searcher's sake...

get the NON-TRD version. use the $2000 to $3000 you save to buy two ARB lockers, so 4.56's or 4.88's, two master install kits, an ARB compressor, and a set of genuine Toyota TRD Stickers if you must...

get the lockers and gears installed and slap the stickers on the side. you'll then have a geared and DOUBLE-LOCKED rig ready for a lift (you'd ditch the stock TRD stuff anyway, so why pay for it) and larger wheels (stock is 16x7's and you really should use 16x8's with 285's, 305's and 315's) and tires.

weird. i know this thread started in 9.05, but andy's last post shows 3.06? but it showed up in today's 'new posts' search which is 10.06.. i think yotatech is messing with my head.

anyway...for this it'd be a tossup, tacoma-wise i suppose. elocker is great, but andy's post does have a strong case for the 8.4. question though...why was the locker not available as an option on the tacoma like it was on the 4runner? and only available as a package deal on the TRD? hmmm. good thing us runner owners had that option. andy, im guessing you bought yours non elock equipped knowing you'd go dual arbs? had you had the elocker in there..would you have still gone dual arbs or half n half?

whenever someone votes in the poll it bumps it to the top.

aaah ok that makes sense...kinda haha. i dunno, i figure some have hard ons for elockers and some for arbs. one could sell one to fund the other...

Youngbuck: I would go with the TRD package again for myself, I've been completely satisfied with it, and have done a good deal of offroading with a nearly facory setup. I did tell the dealer to remove the decals and badges before I took delivery, so I am probably missing a few ponies.

As long as you are content with all the components, I think TRD will save you time and money. But if you would rather have an ARB locker or Rancho shocks etc for whatever reason, then you would be better served with the SR5 model.

BTW, ARB is probably an excellent product, but it still relies on a working compressor. The e-locker can be manually engaged if the electrical connection ever fails (double check me on that anyone?).

If you end up with an SR5 or anything other than a TRD truck, make sure it comes with 31" tires. Then you at least have 4.10 gears from the factory. I don't know if that is an issue with 2007 models, but in 2000 Toyota was still producing 4WD trucks with smaller tires. This is a subtle but important point if you wont be putting your big mudders on immediately.

I've voted! Now, where's my sticker?! I just get addicted to these polls. I can't post anything yet. Is it because I'm cheap and haven't donated? I think that $13k for a truck with 90k miles is way too high anyways. This dude has his ride now, someone PM him and let him know that his poll worked. youngbuck (my brother that needs to post more) has bought TWO separate '01 TRD Tacomas since he started this thread. The first one was totaled (see '92 4runner link in my sig). The second replacement he bought is the exact same Taco but it's silver instead of white and will soon be getting a "facelift".

ohh and his e-locker kicks butt.

edit: this still turned out to be a great thread to read. Lots of good info and opinions.

Quick question:

When the TRD locker in engaged, what is the power split? Meaning, is it a full 50/50 split or does one side get a bit more power to it then the other?

Does that make sense?
