Broke front diff.

First of all hello everybody. It has been awhile since my last post but i need a little help. I was driving my 98 tacoma in 4 wheel drive and it made a loud pop and then the front end quit pulling. I know the hubs are good and the driver side cv axle is good. The passenger side spins freely when i shift the transfer case in 4lo or high without the hub locked in. When i turn the driveshaft with it unlocked the drivers side cv shaft turns but the passenger does'nt. Im thinking it is a broken inner shaft. Any help or prior experience with this would be greatly appreiciated. Thanks

First off, is the truck ADD or manual hub?
If add..
The CV could have broken at the splines inside of the wheel hub.
At least thats what it sounds like to me.

The CV is splined into the wheel hub so it wouldn't be able to spin freely without the wheel turning if it was intact.
Pull the wheel and pull the dust cover and undo the CV nut and go from there.

It is not add and it is manual hubs. If the cv is broken it would have to be in the differintial housing end because it does'nt spin when i lock the hub in. I guess to be more specific has anyone broken the inner axle or housing end of the cv before. I have found my problem to be in that area.

The CV should be following the wheel when it is locked in. But if you mean "isn't spinning" like, isn't getting any power, then it could be a spider gear inside the diff.

But, I haven't heard of the jack shaft busting. Though, I suppose its possible. Get one from a junkyard for cheap.

It is following the wheel when locked but definitly not getting any power to the passenger side. The driver side seems to be getting power when i spin the driveshaft by hand and that makes me think it is'nt the spider gears. I guess i'm gonna tear it down this week.

Possible broken front diff?

I think I am having the same problem as you.
I have a 2000 Taco 4x4 with ADD, 4" procomp lift with crossmember drop. My passenger side cv popped out of the tulip while turning right in 4Lo. I thought it was just the axle so I replaced the cv axle with a new one and while it was on jackstands I noticed that the drivers cv would turn but not the passenger. I took it for a test drive and as soon as I put it in 4Lo and began turning right the cv axle popped out of the tulip again. My mechanic thinks it could be a broken gear in the diff. I am now looking for a new third member rather than tear the diff apart. I was wondering if I were to purchase a LockRight locker for the diff would I also need to get new gears or does the lockright include everything?
