I know someone has mentioned it before - but what is the layer of "padding" underneath the bonnet for? Is it sound proofing or a fire blanket? And what are the effects of removing it?

I need to know as I did a "Dukes of Hazzard" slide across the bonnet and put a dent in it. Now I've got most of it out but I need to beat a crease out.

So can anyone say if removing it will cause any future problems or not?

In case anyone is confused, The "bonnet" is what we call the hood.

I think the effects of removing the padding are minimal. I don't have any under my hood, and I know there's alot of people on here that don't have any either.

Did you make a vid of your Dukes of Hazzard slide??

The stuff under the bonnet is just soundproof although I am pretty sure it is fire resistant. Mind you if you need that piece of stuff to protect you from fire you better get out of the motor quick cos you in serious trouble.

Actually, that cover under the hood is designed to stop the fire in case the fire occurs.

The theory behind it is that the entire protector is held in place by plastic clips. Once the fire starts, plastic clips will melt and let the cover go over engine, therefore stoping fire from spreading futher.

I'm not exactly sure how well this works in real life, since thankfully I have never had to try it out

Excellent, didn't know that one. Sounds like a good idea actually.

So I guess that if it gets damaged in any way with tears in it then it should be replaced as it won't be able to keep the air out.

I presume that if someone fits an aftermarket hood scoop or vents then that would defat the object as there would be a big hole in it.

Since I have a diesel, and therefore the risk of fire is fairly minimal, is it safe to assume that I can remove it, beat the bonnet back into shape, and then leave it off?

Now since I bent it once, is there any thing to "reinforce" it easily? I did hear about someone who was looking at mounting their spare on the bonnet in the old series III LandRover style but they were driving a Disco or a Cruiser.

Anyone had a similar idea as it does "sound" kinda cool!

I'd say yes. I removed it from my old Mustang and it lowered the underhood temps significantly. That generation of Fords have problems with their ignition modules shorting out due to heat - after removing the insulation they went out less often but still went out eventually.

I've debated removing mine since all the clear coat is peeling on my hood - looks like too much heat is baking the paint.

I thought it was the cute little hat that came stock on my runner when I took delivery.

My '98 runner didn't have one when I bought it brand new.
