Bad clutch or did it get hot??
I took my son wheelin and I think the clutch might have gotten hot or it is getting old. I was in some tight spots so I to go from 1st to reverse a few times but after I got out of the woods it seemed like it might have been slipping a bit but today it is fine. The person I bought it from claimed the clutch had been changed recently. And another question who makes a good clutch for our truck I have a 91 4wd 22RE. Thanks for any input.

In general Centerforce makes a pretty good clutch. And if you get the dual friction that has some really nice characteristics. Primarily you can get it really hot and sticky... then let it cool and it works just like new. The kevlar is very forgiving. Also they have counterweights on the pressure plate, so the more they spin the harder they clamp down on the disc.
The downside to the DF setup is that it has a little heavier pedal. If that doesn't bother you, you won't be dissappointed.

I've installed a CenterForce DF in a car I had liked it a bunch great improvement over the brand new stock one I smoked after 1 month...I bought the truck a moth or so ago and am slowly fixing things as I find them. I can do the clutch myself so not worried about it if I have to change it. And my truck has 209k and I have no idea when the tranny fluid was changed I have some time off coming up might be a good time to do it..

i hate the clutch i bought off ebay for $60. you get what you pay for, i guess. at least it has the springs instead of rubber blocks, and it doesn't slip, but the pedal feel is non existant.
i think i'm gonna go for a LUK ceramic clutch or one of marlin's offerings when i pull the tranny out...

I asked my uncle, a mechanic for many years, what kind of clutch I should get and he said one word, "LUK."
But to answer your question, when you get a clutch hot, it will definately slip a lot more. If it works fine after you let it cool down, then it's not bad.

luk is a decent replacement used in the auto industry to oem spec.... they are cool....
i currently have a cf df clutch... love it... excpet a couple weeks ago in sf, it smelled pretty bad..... i have yet to take it out and check it, but it never slipped on me, even when it was stinky..... my ranny blew on an unrelated note, so the tranny is currently out, im just going to pull the clutch and inspect it for problems, doubt i will find anything though... if it needs replacement i will get a marlins ceramic or anotehr df....
