I have a '96 4runner 2wd with 170k on it. I've noticed that my shifter moves when I accelerate. I give it gas and the shifter (automatic) will move back. I'll let off the gas and it will move forward. I looked under the truck and I can move the trans up and down where the drive-shaft connects. The trans mount at the rear of the runner (where the drive-shaft connects) appears to allow the trans to move up and down. Is there supposed to be a bushing to prevent this movement? Or is the movement normal?? Thanks

The bushings allow the engine and transmission to move around a little bit. A certain amount is normal, and too much movement is a sign of a broken motor/transmission mount, or worn bushing.

The part of the rear trans mount has a rod that goes through a hole in the chassis. The end of the rod has a flat circular piece of metal on the end of it that keeps the mount from going through the hole in the chassis. There is some space between this flat piece of metal on the end of the rod and that's what is allowing the trans to move up and down. Is there supposed to be a bushing inbetween the chassis and this circular metal piece?

Having owned a '92, '99 and now a 2000 4Runner, all three of them did have some movement in the shifter when accelerating or even if I would hit a rough bump in the road. I will say that It was usually an inch overall movement.

Mine does the same thing.....it is just part of the design, nothing to worry about.
