ATTN: Gearheads
I was toying around with my 4Runner todat and tried to calculate the R+P ratio, I got appx. 2.5 turns on the driveshaft for one rotation of the tire, anybody know what stock toyota ratio this would be?
Thanks a lot,

There's an easier way. There is a code in your door jamb. G###. The #'s tell you the ratio from a chart that's floating around on "the wire". Mine is G144. 8", 4.88's.

Yep, 4.56 is the stock gearing for the 5-speed. I think most people would say that 4:88s are a better match for 33s. But you have the skinny 33s so maybe there is not so much rolling resistance in the tire to really bog you down in 5th gear. Can you ascend a decent grade at highway speed in 5th or do you always have to downshift to 4th?

4.56's are not the only gears that came stock with the 5 speed. It all depends on what tire package you came with. Mine is a 5 speed but it came with 225's and it's got 4.10's I think. Stick some 31's on there and I'm already hurting. Hopefully I'll have 4.88's in it pretty soon when I put my 33's on this spring. I been driving 300 miles alot going home on the weekends and there's alot of hills on that route. It would totally suck ass with the 33's and the gearing I have now...

When I went to Timberline ski resort in WV I had to go up in 4th a lot, I could have probably managed 5th except i was hauling 4 other people, thier gear and skies/boards on the rack.

For the earlier (underpowered) trucks and 4Runners it pretty simple: 4.10 for 28/29's, 4.56 for 31's, 4.88 for 33's, 5.29 for 35's. For the later trucks, power increases will allow any easy slip to a larger tire size without a gear change.
