I'm looking into a 1990 4RUNNER. IT has 227,000. I wanted to know what experience YOTATECH members have had with Rebuilds/Replacements of the 3.0 V6. I'm interested in a relatively cheap, maybe $2,000-$4,000 way to rebuild or replace.

If you can help me out I'd appreciate it

Are there better Engines that could be compatible with the 89-95 V6?

Maybe even a 5.0 V8 like John Douglas!

I just replaced mine, it's quite the task if you ask me. It cost me 3 grand for a long block and about 750 to 1000 bucks for tools that boke/needed. I don't know how much you need your truck, but I'd look at a different engine.

The 3.4 litre from 96 and up 4runners will bolt up. With this you get more useable power and the option to supercharge. I found this option is going be cheaper than rebuilding the 3.0. Do a search on here for it and at www.bc4x4.com

i could tell you my neighbors experience with an 88 3.0 4runner. they bought it with 240k miles 2 years ago. they put over $3500 into it determined to keep it forever. they traded it in yesterday because the tranny was going out and it had an intermittent electrical problem. it looked perfect tho, never wrecked and in great shape......

now they bag on toyotas, hello? 260k miles? what do people expect, give me a break!!oh, because its a toyota it should last forever....please.

but if you are a good mechanic have fun. it is my understanding that the easiest 3.4 swaps are 5spd's without ac and tach. you can find good used 3.4's pretty cheap...

I'd go for the 3.4 swap when the 3.slow dies. There's been a lot of discussion on this very topic over at 4x4Wire's Toyota pages.

5.0 swap. i am gathering parts now, i am gonna have 1100 in 93 efi motor, trans, aa adapter for toy tcase, ecu, harness. should be a reliable 250 hp and 250 torque. fuel injected, and great for dd guys too. all of which will not compromise my toy axles and gears.
