4wd 4runner gets better mileage than 2wd 4runner?

I got my first 4runner 4 months ago and then i got into an accident a month ago the insurance company totalled it. I bought my 2nd one and this time its 4wd. The first 4runner was 2wd and it only got 230 miles to the tank and the 4wd now gets 300 miles per tank. Same year and both were in great mechanical shape, both had a 105,000 miles on them and were automatics. I was just wondering if The gears are maybe different for the 2wd or when the 4wd is in 2wd. Did anybody else notice this?

HABITS?

WELCOME!

First off, which engine is it? 4cyl or 6cyl?

that could be the reason.

Poser Package

Welcome to the Forum.

In addition to the motor, check the tire size that the vehicle came from the factory with.....this can be found on the sticker driver door sill. If one of your vehicles originally came with 235's and the previous owner changed those and put on 31x10.5's then your gearing would be off and this will affect your mpg. It is unusual for the 2wd to get worse mileage than the 4wd because of the additional weight of the 4wd front drive train and transfer case.

I'll bet your 4wd originally came from the factory with the larger tires while the 2wd had the 'poser package' of larger wheels added to make it look like an off-road vehicle.
