22ret 88 4runner only 10 mpg help

I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM. I HAVE BEEN READING PEOPLE WITH V6'S COMPLAIN ABOUT 10 - 15 MPG. THATS WHEN I STARTED TO WONDER WHY MY 88 TOYOTA 4RUNNER AUTO WITH 31'S GET 10 MPG. I HAVE CHANGED AIR FILTER I WANTED AMSOIL BUT COULDNT FIND PARTS STORE THAT HAD ONE SO I BOUGHT A FRAM FOR NOW. I HAVE CHECKED PCV VALVE TOO. I ALSO HAVE REALLY POOR ACCELLERATION AND I DONT THINK THE VALVES HAVE EVER BEEN ADJUSTED . IT HAS 222000 MILES ON IT. RUNS GREAT THOUGH BESIDES THESE FEW PROBLEMS. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST I SHOULD DO TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS. SHOULD I BUY NEW ENGINE IF THIS ONE GOES OUT OR REBUILD THIS ONE. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED . I HAVE ALREADY FIXED ALOT OF THING ON MY TRUCK JUST BY SEARCHING THREADS. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP

Have you checked the codes on it? Sounds like it is need of some long overdue maint.
My 22-re is getting close to 20 mpg on 33's. I know its not a turbo, but you should be getting close to that.

Sounds like turbo isn't working with poor giddy-up. Also, might check compression and see if all in specs.. If a valve adjust doesn't cure a compression problem or leaves you with one cylinder with bad compression, might be burnt valve, then you might live with a new head or valve job. If several cylinders are still low after a valve adjust, may need a total rebuild. Might be mechanic time to get it evaluated before throwing good money after bad.

Oh yeh, my 1990 22re (non-turbo) gets 20-23 mpg all the time, stock. I had a volvo turbo wagon with a 4 cylinder and it got 18-23mpg depending on how i drove it, and it was pretty fast esp. with the turbo boosted. If your turbo was working I would think you should have good acceleration and even if you drove hard all the time you shouldn't get such low mileage (10mpg).

if your engine has that high mileage for one your turbo is shot, turbo motors use larger injectors which means more fuel and less mpg. id say im getiing about 15mpg on my 22rte and it only has about 4k on it since i rebuilt the bottom end(the top will be done at a later time) and got a new turbo.if your engine does blow up id say to put in a n/a 22re since it is way cheaper and will bolt right in, just change the ecu and the engine wireing harness.oh yeah i forgot to say im runnin 33" tires w/an auto tranny, if i had a 5 spd im sure the mpg would be better.

Yea, I would check youre plugs, wires, and all that standard stuff and you will probably pick up 5mpg. Mine does 18-24 mpg with 31" tires.

youll have to somehow get to the turbine shaft and wiggle it to check for play, if you can wiggle it around you have a problem, also check for oil in your intake tube going to the throttle body, if there is any there you probably have bad oil seals in your turbo, can you hear the turbo winding up when you accellerate, it should make a sort of whining noise kinda like semi trucks, but not as loud. also on the back of the compressor housing you need to check for cracks.

this picture shows the shaft to check for play, the housing is removed for better viewing, dont remove yours tho. this is the turbine side of the turbo.


this is where to check for cracks, this is the back of the turbo, compressor side, its kinda hard to see the crack but its really big up close.

this is just a view of the complete turbo.

after youve driven your truck and go to turn it off, do you let it idle for at least 2 minutes so that the turbo will cool down enough not to burn the oil in it, if not then your seals are most definately shot, most people who get turbo vehicles dont know about this detail, i know i didnt and it cost me alot.

The easiest way to check to see if it has a turbo is to open the hood and see the turbo. Can't miss it - it's the big turbo-looking thingie attached to all those pipes...

Also don't forget your mileage will be off if you aren't taking into account the difference in tire size between 225s and 31s. It's about 13-14% more. (i.e 10 mpg figured would actually be 11.3 mpg...) Hey, if we can do the math cleverly enough maybe we can get your mileage back without you having to do anything to the truck. Lessee, you go 200 miles, but add 14% so it's 228 miles. You used 20 gallons, but wait, we need to subtract 14% so call it 17.2. 228/17.2=13.25, but lets don't forget that 14% so make that 13.25+14%=15.11 See, we got ya 50% more mileage with only a few keystrokes....

Hmmmm Then I Am Getting Terrible Mileage . I Was Told When I Bought Truck That It Was A Turbo But Ok . Would It Be Worth It To Convert To A Turbo Or With The Problems Should I Buy Another Engine With Turbo. Once Again Thanks For All Then Help

if a good tune up doesnt help any, id say just rebuild what ya got, going to turbo costs way too much, also to really help things out, id suggest swapping out your auto tranny for a 5spd.

Another thing I thought I'd add for the checking to see if a turbo is bad...

Most OEM supplied turbos are internally wastegated, and usually over time, the exhuast housing around the wastegate flapper will crack. So part of that exhuast housing crack inspection should include diconnecting the waste gate actuator, then opening the waste gate to check for cracks....

Don't bother to turbo it - lotta money, hard to get right, and unless you like tinkering with it (and know how) you'll hate it. Need to figure out what's wrong with your motor though. With the auto you should still be getting 17-19 mph.
