22re clutches

Ok ive posted many a topic bout my trans swap but now i got another question. Im trying to take a w56-b and its t-case and swap it into a 93 4runner where a g58 tcase was. I dunno if this even works but i want to change the clutch since i got the tranny out. What am i lookin for in a clutch. Do i ask for a '93 22re clutch or a '87 (4runner the other trans came out of) 22re clutch or something else?

you'll want a clutch for the '93 if you're swapping it in there. around '89 or so, the 22RE got a bigger clutch and a flywheel with more clutch surface on it.

Sometime in 1992 they went to a 9 5/16" clutch instead of the old 8 7/8".
The swap is definitely doable since there were early 2nd gens that came with w56 trannies.
I think the only problem you will have is the w56b tranny/transfercase combo is a top load transfercase whereas a 1993 that would have come with a w56 (damn few and far between from what I've found) would be a w56d with a forward shift transfercase. Check around, but I think you may wind up having to notch out the console to get a top loading transfercase to work.

The 93 4runner has a g58 trany which will make the swap much harder since it is completely different. from what i understand, not many ppl seem to know a lot about this swap, is that if i take out the whole trans and tcase unit then i should be able to put in the old w56b unit. From what i have measured the whole thing is either the same length or off by a fraction of an inch so all im worried about now is it actually bolting up in there.

That is what I said. Swapping the whole unit is doable. My understanding is that it is a straight bolt up. The only real problem is that you are replacing the g58/chaindrive forward shift set up with a w56 top loader which pushes the transfercase shifter about 3 inches(?) back which may not clear the console without modifying it. Go here: http://marlincrawler.com/trans.html and compare pics of the g58 with the w56b you have and you will see the problem pretty clearly. It isn't the overall length of the assembly that is any problem it is the fact that the transfercases are two different shifter types.
There is also the potential the location of the transmission shifter is somewhat forward of the g58 so you may have dash clearance issues.
Post about it on Marlin and you'll get answers from the best there is
If it helps any, I have a '93 4Runner with the g58 and unless I get stupid and put in a 7mge, I will be doing a w56 swap in the future as well. I've had a chain drive transfercase before and I don't like them.

p.s. A little late, but if you come up with a w56c or d tranny/transfercase combo, they would be really be pretty much plug and play. Both were used in the 2nd gen 22re 4Runners.

your reply is just what i wanted to hear. Yota tech and marlin crawler are practically my homepages but i cant seem to get a picture of a g58 over there. I posted on there forum but only had one reply who said he thinks it should work. I didnt really look around here, I live in Newfoundland Canada not many places to look, for a C or a D but my dad has 2 old 87 4runners that he basically got for nothing and they were in very bad shape body wise but mechanically they were pretty sound. Someone wanted to buy the tranny outta one so he took it out but buddy never came out so its just sitting in the shed waiting to be put in my 4runner.

Were the 87s both EFI? If they are carbed, I believe they would be g54s not w56's. Not sure when EFI really became mandatory with 4Runners
I was going to check my FSM about another issue, the speed sensor, but my son thought I wasn't paying enough attention to him (he was kinda right) so I put down the book. I think the '93 has an electronic speed sensor while the '87 would have a cable driven setup. I'm not sure how this affects getting the speedo to work. I only got the full set of FSMs recently and never have had the chance to go through and get some clue of how this truck works.

yeah both 4runners were efi and have w56b trannys. The spedometer is not really a big issue right now it is the least of my worries, well actually figuring out where to mount my lights is probably the lowest on my list but you know. Thanks farenheit 451
