1st gen a/c question

Background 86 22re . I need to have my a/c charged r12 is hella expensive. I have a quote to convert it over to 134a for 150 + tax . This sounds reasonable ,but I am not even sure if the compressor works . The system is completely empty and with the low pressure shut off valve there is no way to tell if the comp. is working. So I guess my question is ,is it worth the conversion? Worst case how much for an aftermarket comp. ? I have no reason to believe it is not working. sorry for the novel.

the conversion is the cheapest and easiest way to go i think. Just yesterday i had to take my sis's runner to the shop to get it done b/c the recharge was tooexpensize.

Is it really that cheap? I have'nt really checked into it but I had the impression that it was pretty expensive. Besides, mine is hanging in there... barely.

That is a price quoted from a local shop.
