Question 1991 4Runner 4X4 Auto 3.0 V6: Should I buy it???

1991 4X4 V6 4Runner with 172000 miles. My friend at work is looking to sell it to buy a minivan. Is this a good buy? 172000 miles = 13000 miles per year. Thats pretty light. He has only had the truck for 6 months since he purchased it from a dealer. So I'm thinking that socker mom drove it around for the first 8 years, and traded it in. I drove it the other day, no vibrations, it wont shift into 4LOW, has 30" BFG all terrains, immaculate paint/body/interior.

Need advice. I've never heard anything good or bad about the 3.0 V6 automatic + transfer case.

Thanx

I have one. As a daily driver it's not too bad, but the gas mileage is underwhelming. They don't call the engine 3.slow for nothing either.

It's fun to wheel it. I don't get out as much as I would like to, but I have a blast every time I go. I'd have a mechanic turn a wrench or two to get that transfer case working in low range. You'll have a blast with it if you take it off road.

I suppose it mostly depends on how big your budget is and how much power are you looking for. If you are a big fan of the 4Runner then it is a good place to start. I have had a 1990 for several years and heavilly modified it over that time. It holds more sentimental value than resale value and If I had it to do all over again I would probably opt for a 3rd generation model. (1996-2002) The 3.4L is a much better motor in my humble opinion.

I'm going to go look at it some more today, or tomorrow. He will sell it to me for $4800, but if I don't want to buy it from him he will trade it in.

I expect bad gas mileage, but I drive like a grandma so the 3.sl0w doesn't bother me so much.

MODZILLA, are you happy with all the engine/suspension mods? What kind of performance did you get aout of them?
I ask because I want to mod this 4Runner with practically the same stuff: Headers, exhaust, mild suspension, lights, ect...

Screw it. I test drove it today, and my '86 pickup is faster than that truck. The check engine light was on, leaking exaust, clicking sound from the front of the motor.

I guess I'll find another.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but, YES most definately. The thing goes pretty darn good. It was a total labor of love/hate and looking back it cost me way too much but like you say, screw it. It is a total matter of one thing leads to another and another and another. In the end the result is very good though.
