1985 Topper removal

Im sure this has been post a million times on here, but is it easy to remove the topper on the back half of my 4runner??? It looks as if it just unbolts and i could lift it off with the forks on my tractor....is it really this simple?

Takes about 15 minutes and you already eliminated the hardest part if you have something to lift it off like that.

Alright, that was what i that it entailed but thanks for the info. Since the warm weather is coming around i think it would be a good idea since the A/C doesnt work it will make for a semi converable.

You'll love this. Just the other day someone asked me about taking off the Runner top. I told him it's fun to take the doors off too - he said he didn't want to do that because someone might steal his stereo....

Taking the top off with the forks of a tractor? I'm always worried I'm going to damage the thing taking it off with a couple of people handling it.

I have yet to take mine off yet and am worried about flexing the fiberglass and snapping it.

How sturdy are these tops? Its finally getting warmer in Iowa and I'm getting a real itch to let what's left of my hair blow in the wind.

They really don't flex that much. If you use two people and just walk it off towards the back, you'll be fine. I've noticed the weight is pretty much centered for grabbing and balancing (may be slightly more rear-heavy).

If you have a way of mounting 4 heavy duty tow straps to your garage rafters and slipping two 2x4's under the front and back of the top, cinch up the straps for clearance, you can drive away and then do with it what you like. I believe Roger Brown uses this method and illustrates it on his website. I'm going to try and construct something like that this weekend (although the top isn't going back on until September, so i'm in no rush).
I just took mine off last night so I could drive it to work today (65 here in NJ). Watched all the corporate folks stare as I rolled into the parking lot. Yeah, my truck's cooler than your BMW. Hehe
