Hey Terry,
Thanks for the reply. I'll do that. I did some more research and they are all saying about the same thing as you so I'm not as worried anymore. I'm just really trying to do it right the first time around. Thanks again.

Ok well the motor is almost done so I kept it on the stand and tucked it in the corner for now. I have a few little things to do to it but I need to get a couple miscellaneous parts from the dealership so I started the next phase of the project: the trans.
Here is a before of it.
And after a good cleaning.

I have a w56 five speed transmission. After countless hours of research, asking questions, and wanting to learn, I decided to go for it. This transmission is in something like 27 toyota vehicles and I was so surprised I couldn't find a rebuild thread on the internet so I decided to post some pics of the progress. So here goes nothing.
Bellhousing off.
Rear half housing off and first look of internals.
Another view.
Got the front cover off and in the vise.

So I was very happy with how everything looked inside. The truck has 201,000 miles on it and everything in this thing looks good with the exception of reverse gear has a little bit of normal wear. Nothing too bad. There are a couple spots that took some heat too but overall great shape. I probably could have thrown the housings back on and been fine but I've gone this far so I figured new bearings and syncros could make it last another 200,000 miles.
Here's where things started really coming off.
Shift forks off. Watch out for all the little locking pins and balls!
Rear hub assembly and counter shaft fifth gear pulled off.
Snap ring off to pull rear output shaft sleeve, bearing, and fifth off.
This was the hardest part so far but got those parts pulled plus reverse.
Intermediate bearing retainer off and all shafts pulled through and out. Ready for the press.

Dropped the tank and changed out fuel pumps, wanted a fresh fuel system for initial start up.
Got the rebuild kit in and started putting the trans back together. Pressed on most of the output shaft. I had a hard time getting all the tolerances right for the gears. It's only a window of about 6 thousandths thrust for each gear.
Output shaft with new bearings installed.
Input shaft with new input bearing.
Got the output shaft through the intermediate plate.
Then the input shaft, counter shaft, and bearing retainer.
Then reverse, fifth, 3rd clutch hub and counter fifth.
Hopefully I'll have it back in the case today.
